I am taking in my wifes honda for 2 recalls, one of them in the letter states the update ends 2012 but other does not mention.

I checked for some on my truck and there are several but I have no clue if they will still honor it...

when do these things typically "expire" to the point they won't fix it for free?

It will depend on car manufacturer. I know Subaru is still honoring at least one recall from 1988.

i've never heard of them expiring.

extended warranty items will have time and mileage limits, though. and by 'extended warranty' i mean individual parts that the manufacturer has increased the warranty coverage for to avoid a lawsuit. it's basically like a recall, but with a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' qualifier.

If it is a safety issue it should never expire. Other items might expire - depends on the manufacturer.

recalls don't expire ASFAIK.

technical bulletins (TSBS) typically are only for the life of the warranty.

Safety recalls never expire.

Service programs or notifications have an expiration date, as they are generally just warranty extensions on certain parts.

TSB's have nothing to do with this subject. They are simply additional repair or parts info.
