i bought a 4x in january... now it feels slow... really slow... 16x burns in 5 minutes. holy nuts. 800 meg in 5 minutes. i wonder if i'd still be able to burn cd's over my 100base network?

Will my 5400rpm DMA33 hard drives slow down the burn process with the next generation of 20x burners ? Will it be necessary to have DMA100 or 7200rpm drives wth these high speed burners ??

No. The transfer rate on a typical hard drive is MUCH faster than even the fastest CD writer (currently the 16x Yamaha). Do the math:

150kps x 16 = 2400kps = roughly 2.3MBps, assuming that 1MB = 1024k

Modern hard drives (even the 5,400 rpm ones) hover around 20MBps sustained transfer rates, showing that a typical hard drive's performance is about 10x greater than the fastest burners.

I don't think we have anything to worry about right now.

How is the quality of CD-DA when burnt at 12x or higher? I was told there is a differnce between 2x and 4x which I still have yet to notice...
