I'm 36, and I haven't lost any of my hair, although I keep it shaved to the length of a long stubble.

I'm not sure, maybe when I was 23. I still have enough to fill in the top mostly but scalp is starting to show. I just cut the sides shorter to blend the thinness. It's not too noticeable. My hairline has receded by half an inch at the front corners.

26 when my hairline started to recede. Now to think of it, I think it just migrated south.

Hairy genes FTW!!!

I'm 49 and no hair loss here, and my dads 80 and still has a full head of hair.

Although I'm getting more snow on the roof each year, atleast the roof is still there:)

Unfortunatley your father is irrelevant because the hair is passed on thru the mothers side. Look at your mothers father to know what you've inherited. At least, that's what I've heard (and seems to be true from what I've seen).

That's largely a myth derived from dubious studies in the 1920s. Recent studies still suggest influence from the mother's side (that's probably not surprising), but the genes related to androgens are largely influenced by those from both parents. That's what I've read anyway...

Cool, good info to know. I'd always wondered if it was an old wives tale but never had the time or motivation to study it further. I've been shaving my head for about 5 years btw.

 Problem solved as far as I'm concerned.

Makes you wonder if all this shampooing and chemicals we put in our hair isn't the cause of these problems. If you would think of when your mother's father's time, shampoo and these haircare products where probably not used on a daily basis. I saw a study that took 4 women and that 2 of them did not wash their hair with shampoo or conditioner for 6 weeks (just water) and it came back thicker and fuller.

Maybe water is the key and shampoo is the cause? Makes you wonder.

My hair is thinning but now I use propecia and Rogaine so its thicker now. (I was born with thick hair and started thinning probably early teens)

I thought about that too gnum. I also think it's because of genetics (obviously) but stress can sometimes accelerate the process.Like, rapid hair loss. Mine has really been noticable in the past 6 months. The pic I posed was from a year ago.

29 and I have a thick, full head of hair. I've lost maybe a milimeter or two at each temple, or maybe it's my imagination... No gray. Whatever I've lost has come in 100-fold on my back though. My grandfather (the one I knew) died at 86 with a thinning, but full head of hair. It's a good thing, too - I've shaved my head before and it looks awful. It's oddly shaped and has a big offset lump on the back

I noticed a thinning patch on top of my head when I was about 21 or so. I have been taking what is known in hairloss circles as the "big 3" - finasteride, minoxidil, and nizoral, for almost a couple years now. That seems to have stopped the loss, but it isn't growing any back, either.

I figure if worse comes to worse, I'll just shave my head. I don't think it would look that bad. Losing my hair gives me even more motivation to keep up my weightlifting.

my maternal grandfather still has a full head of hair at 80. So it's looking good that I won't go bald for a long while :)

Probably around 18 when I first noticed...I'm 25 now...it's not bad, not bad at all...slowly but surely but...eh...not really that big of deal...just gotta go with cuts that minimize the appearance of balding....mine's really just a hairline recession though.

That's a myth. My maternal grandfather had a full head of hair his entire life, yet I am losing mine.

I'm in my 50's, and other than the hairline creeping up about an inch, and having mild widow's peaks, I still have a full head of thick (but gray) hair. My wife talked me into growing it out a couple of years ago, (always wore it high & tight), and now, it's down past my shoulders...

Speaking of myths, I wore a hat all through high school and for years after. Damn near slept in it. When one got worn down I'd buy another. My hair (sorry, no offense to those of you losing yours) is really luxuriant and thick, and still not receding much if at all. As I said I think maybe a mm or two back at the temples, but it could be my imagination... or maybe the perma-scowl I've developed as I've seen more and more of this world has enlarged my forehead a bit.

:( really? that's what I learned in biology about 6 years back. damn I hated that class but that's about the only thing a remembered.

so what's the truth about balding? completely parental genetic? recessive gene? my father started balding in his late 40's. I have a really thick head of hair (which gets annoying), so hopefully I won't go bald too soon

If the absolute truth about all factors leading to hair loss were known, people wouldn't pay through the nose to grow peach fuzz (rogaine) or to have a 10% chance of stopping - but not reversing - hair loss (propecia). That's not to mention the thousands people spend on hair transplants (this actually works, they relocate follicles from the back/sides of your head to the top - but it's not cheap). Oh, and then there are the infomercials...
