it only saves recovery info now, which is gone if you close the document. it doesn't actually save the file. i swear it used to save the file.

The auto save never used to work for me anyway...that's why I always do it manually...

I type so fast that the 5 minute window is pointless... I'm done and saved ;)

Actually, I think there's a setting in preferences for auto-saving.

Actually, I think you're right... it only updates the automatic recovery file every x number of minutes (you set in options)

Why would you want it to automatically save it every 5 minutes under the same name? I can't count the number of times I've been working on a complex document, reformatting columns and tables for the 100th time, only to majorly screw everything up. I simply close without saving and reload the last version I saved. If it automatically overwrote the previous version, including major screwups just before I was able to go back, I'd be seriously pissed.

Did Word ever autosave? I've used 6.0, 97, 2000, and XP and don't ever remember a true autosave feature. But it has been many years since I've used some of those versions. For a while there was an autobackup which would save two files (one as a .bak) each time you clicked save. But I honestly don't remember Word actually saving your file for you.

The auto recovery is just that -- a recovery from a crash. If Word crashes you are safe. But if you close without saving, you are screwed.

Can go under tools/Autosave or in the Options area (I forget where it is) and turn that setting on. I Word 2002 and higher do save the recovery info in case something crashes, but they will also prompt you to save if you've changed anything so having it autosave really shouldn't be necessary...
