when did sony release a $400 ps3?

The Best Buy salesperson that I was speaking to today said that they released it today, but I thought it was supposed to launch Friday.

FYI, that model does not run any PS2 games, just PS3 and PS1.

It still plays blu-ray movies and includes wifi networking though.

I saw someone in EB today asking about the $400 ps3 they saw advertised. I was kind of curious whether the the sales clerk would mention that it wasn't backwards compatible with PS2 games and try to sell them the more expensive one.

They were in my Wal-mart last Tuesday for sale... actually it may have been Monday. I can't remember which.

It was released on Friday 11/2.

Frys had a pallet of them on the floor.

Next to the other pallet full of PS3s? 😀 j/k

Within one day after they announced the price cut on the 80gb model, my local Fry's sold a pallet load, and only had a few 60gb's left.

what caused the price drop other than the obvious smaller hard drive?
is the cost of the ps2 backwards compatibility (chip) that expensive?
or bluray going down in price? if it were this, wouldn't the 80gb drop in price too?

Low sales.

The 80GB did drop $100, from $600 down to $500.
