i've been reading pc mag since i was about 9 years old. Meaning 11 years. Its only a little smaller than it used to be. Mostly because they aren't covering hard core topics like they used to . I remember when i was around 10 i was reading about top 20 business pcs and such (286s and some $9000 386s from compaq back when people paid extra for compaq), but they hardly do that anymore, and also they used to dedicate pages and pages to making really good dos batch programs. that and i think they are charging more for ads, and their reader ship is probably lower because of the internet.

I think the main reason is the same reason we no longer see huge, telephone-book-sized copies of Computer Shopper - most of the skillions of vendors who used to pay to advertise in the computer mags can sell stuff more cost-effectively over the Internet. I LOVED Computer Shopper back in the day (and actually I thought it was better from an editorial standpoint than most of the other computer mags).

In response to a recent letter, they've even said "Hey, we're not for hobbyists, we're for professional IT types." Maybe that explains why you can't follow the numbering anymore.

Beats me - I've been reading it since the early 80s. Nowadays I'm more likely to browse their website, though.

I usually can read through anything I'm interested in in about a 1/2 hour. Lots of their major articles are getting more internet tech related, which doesnt' interest me. I do like the laptop round ups, they do an excellent job with those.

Remember its mid-summer now, the slack season for most mags, esp. computer ones. They are all slim this month or week (even Newsweek).

But you are right, the general trend for computer mags is they are getting slimmer. Quite a number have ceased publication, and I suspect that circulation is dropping for the rest. Most interested hobbists get their info from the internet.

i used to get it back in '92... it was pretty thick and came like every week or 2 weeks or something... of course most of it was ads but there were lots of good stuff, like the batch programs in the back and their editorials...

I've noticed that PC World and Popular Science is so slim too....

Luckily, the car mags haven't slimmed down a bit. :)
