When did NiMH become the standard rechargable batteries from manufacturers

A few of years ago if the manufacturer included rechargable batteries for your device, it was NiCd. You know, the ones w/the 'memory.'

This year i've bought 2way walkie talkies and a cordless home phone. both came w/NiMH.

I was quite pleasantly surprised.

When and why did they switch from NiCd to NiMH?
