When did it become acceptable to not return emails?

in the last 2 weeks I have sent a lot of emails, mainly to places looking for job openings, but also to a couple prof.'s here and for some reason it seems I am more surprised now when I actually get a response.

Just wondering if this is normal that people dont have the common courtesy nowadays to return emails

If you removed the "Enlarge your penis TODAY" from the subject line you might get better response. Just a thought.

:)

Unless someone is asking me a question that requires an immediate answer, I generally don't return them either.

Well with jobs this is nothing new...at least the ones I've applied to :). "We'll call you back" always means they only call if they're interested...

whats frustrating is one place i sent emails to 4 different people there...no response...so i got my friend who already works there to get me a phone number to call...called for 3 days and just got voice mails...so i left a message...not saying i was looking for work, but that I had some questions and was refured to them....no response

I reply to ALL emails that aren't spam. ALL of them. If they take the time to write me a question/comment, the least I could do is send a reply, even if it's 1 sentence.

If I know the sender, I'll respond. Else, it completely depends on the mood I'm in.

Maybe your 'friend' already told them about you?

One of the side effects of the bad job situation is that there are far more people looking to get an available position. I know from experience, it can be really easy to get swamped in a pile of mail, resume's, email etc etc in a hurry. Still, it's good policy (and simple courtesy) to reply to the email, even if it is to say "thank you, we'll contact you if we have anything that matches your skillset".

e-mailing for a job?
i probably wouldn't return your e-mail either!
if you don't have the ambition to come into the office so you can give a hardcopy resume and so i can meet you,
you don't even deserve for me to waste my time telling you to get stuffed via e-mail...

So all the employers posting jobs on Monster, Hot Jobs, etc... aren't expecting emailed resumes???

uhm I live in Los Angeles and looking for a research opportunity in NYC...uhm not easy just to walk in...

plus usually they dont advertise research work, every job i have ever gotten has been by finding someone in my research field doing the same type of work and emailng them...

your field isnt the same as everyone elses

This was my SOP too. Now it seems outdated. I guess people are either too lazy or too busy to bother. Says a lot about our times.

Probably around the same time it became okay for my boss to start sending around emails with no evidence of grammar, capitalization, or punctuation.

In Outlook Express, you can request a 'reciept' for your emails. Basically, it sends you back an email when the person reads your message. That's how I know if people are being losers and intentionally not responding.
