When did Hulu's commercial break get so long??

I went to Hulu to check if a new Office was out (it was) and I got the message,
"Sorry, we're unable to load a message from our sponsors." I use an ad-blocking hosts file. It seemed like it took a lot longer than it used to, so I checked at the next break exactly how much time it was stealing from me. 120 seconds!! And I think it added another 90 seconds or more after that. Why can't it be 30 seconds anymore? If I wanted to watch ads, wouldn't I just watch it on network tv? This ad-supported internet is getting old.

Considering you aren't actually watching the commercials, I don't see the issues.

But they've nearly always been that long. It varies, though.

i'm surprised no one has invented ad blocker for TV.

You mean for actual television? TiVo used to have the commercial skipping function. And for web ABP does block ads, it's just that sites like Hulu still have a timer for their videos to make sure you aren't being served the next segment until you at least wait the same amount of time or more.

No one wants to make a commercial ad skipping/blocking device or feature. Too much pressure from advertising companies as well as networks, there is a ton of revenue involved for both.

You're probably right, but I get into the program and suddenly there's a 5 minute spot where I have to switch gears and find something else to do until the show comes back on.

No, they weren't always this long. They've been increasing little by little, but a lot this last year. I hadn't gone to hulu in quite some time before yesterday.

When content licensing rates went up and ad payment rates went way down. It turns out most people don't pay attention to Hulu ads... :p

I still block them as I can load the video of what I am watching fine the last time I went there but every time the ad loads it constantly stops and takes 5-10 seconds to load only 5 more seconds and they become twice or even longer then normal.

Thus ad blocking them saves time usually.

I think everyone is doing this. My wife and I were watching the Big Bang theory online the other night and the commercials were horrendous.

This but I think the last time I used hulu was to catch the last 30 seconds of the office because nbc can't schedule it right usually and the dvr cuts it off then.
I have to add 3 minutes to get everything. I add an hour to football games.

Dish's Hopper has that feature.

Smart Sound, introduced by Magnavox in 1992 on its television sets, is designed to reduce sudden extreme changes in volume, namely the sound of TV commercials relative to the sound of the TV shows they follow.

Not sure what your point is here. This was just a feature to moderate the volume...

That people have been fighting commercials through electronics for over 20 years. Took 18 years to make it a law. Guess you could go back to people taping shit on VCRs and fast forwarding through them even further back, but that was really limited.
