Maybe they're running some kind of test? I can see this only on IE, specifically only on IE7 on the desktop. IE6 and every other browser show no change.

This is just weird.

For me, going to the google.com, it's in the middle above the search field. I thought it was there for a while. I just never used it.

Whats your ISP? I've read where google does testing to only people that come from a certain IP range.

It's not really an addition, more of a change, at least for the OP.

The links that are normally above the search text box are now in the upper left corner of the page.

Google makes changes small-and-often. They will sometimes trial a particular feature with a set of users from a given network subnet; for example Excite@Home users often get to see new features. They aren't told of this, just presented with the new UI and observed how they use it.

Interesting.

Also, the links appear on top only for the main Google home page and the image search page. Rest of it (news, maps, etc.) look the same.
