When did cheating become considered innocuous? also, cable modem question...

I was at school today and overheard some people talking in my class. It's a statistics course where it's all simple math, etc. They were talking about in high school math courses they would put formulas and stuff in their graphing calculators to use during tests. One guy said how one of his math teachers always cleared the memory out of all their calculators before test time. The other people commiserated, saying how that sucked or whatever. He said his math teacher was a bitch... because she wouldn't allow students to cheat. When did this attitude become so common? When I was little, cheating was a huge no no. As I got older, I even started to see cheating as almost harmless. But when you think about what's going on, you have a generation of people thinking it's okay to essentially lie to their teachers and misrepresent what they know. God I hate some of my fellow students.

cable modem question: I have a Cox cable modem account. Is there anything specific I need to look for when buying a cable modem? I'm tired of paying their stupid rental fee and hate that I've mindlessly been paying that fee for the past few years.

High school is a waste of time anyway. You can cheat when you need, as long as you are still learning what you have to know.

Well, I just wish people would just say that it's wrong. People act like it's no big deal just because everyone cheats. Some of these people are going to be commisioned officers in the military, police officers, judges, and lawyers. There was a time when the average person just did not cheat. It wasn't an option. But now since everyone is doing it, so can I.

Like there will ever be a time in real life where they need to do statistics work, but wont be able to look up the formulas...

If teachers don't want students to have formulas & programs in their calculators, they need to specify no calculators.

I wrote physics programs for my TI-92 when I was in school. Saved me lots of time on tests, & nobody would have cared.

I had tests for which calculators were not allowed, those were fine too.

I think it prevents ppl from blindly looking up formulas without understanding what the heck it means

<edit>
or rather ATTEMPTS to do that, still doesn't work in my opinion, ppl then just go blindly memorizing it

i know people like that. If a coursework piece is due in, counting for 20% of grade or whatever, the night before they copy it from the internet. One kid got caught, and he lost the 20%, so he can't get an A now.

There loss imo, when you get to university and the real world you can try and cheat, but in the end it ain't gonna help

I remember in high school people would try to cheat off me. When I wouldn't let them cheat, which I never did, some of them would even have the audacity to call me a lovely human or other spiteful remarks. I would just laugh in my head as I pictured them pumping gas.

I remember people copying off me and getting higher scores because they would happen to screw up the ones I got wrong.

You can say the same thing about software pirating and mp3s. But everyone else does it so I do too.

...and to answer your question your subsequent question, yes, if everyone jumped off a cliff I would too. Maybe I'll get lucky and land on a fat kid.

The thing I hate most about cheating is when it ruins the curve for everyone. People cheat, and you do good, but, it's not fair when the cheaters ruin the curve by not studying.

Yes... that irritates the heck out of me. It almost turns into an arms race, but at least I've never cheated in college. :)

I was renting a modem from Cox for a while. I ended up buying a Toshiba PCX2200 from Cox themselves for under $80. Was cheaper than anywhere else. You might want to call Cox and ask if they have any deals on modems.

My memory isn't perfect, but based on what I know about myself I have never cheated in school in my life. You people who think cheating is OK have lost something of priceless value. You are cheaters. When you look at yourselves you know you are cheaters. You think it doesn't matter because you have no idea what it means to have real self respect. To cheat is to imply, to prove, really, that you are cut off from that experience. Self respect is the only thing worth a damn in life. Cheaters have no idea just how impoverished they really are. Ignorance is ignorance. Bliss comes from real inner contentment. If you cheat, stop immediately.

If you have yourself, you don't worry about people skewing the curve. If you do honest work you aren't on that chart anyway. Don't worry. If you are real and honest you will be the only kind of success that matters.
