When did CBS start broadcasting in 7.1 surround sound?

I'm watching a golf match on my local CBS station, and my receiver says that it's receiving a "D+PLIIxMovie" 7.1 surround sound signal.

Is this for real? My receiver usually shows Dolby Pro Logic, or 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound for TV stations.

They're not. Your receiver is using an algorithm to "expand" the source material to 7.1. Not sure why it hasn't shown this in the past.

All digital television (DTV) broadcasts in the U.S., Canada, and other countries that have adopted the ATSC television standard (www.atsc.org) are transmitted with Dolby Digital.

Like other Dolby Digital program material, the audio format of DTV broadcasts varies from mono to full 5.1-channel surround sound.

I have always received dolby digital signals on my receiver since OTA TV went digital. Perhaps you just needed to change your settings.

It's always detected the signal correctly in the past, switching between various Dolby and DTS surround codecs as needed. Not sure why it's flaking out on this one station.

Hell... I don't even have a 7.1 setup yet!

The fact that DPLIIx is showing on your reciever means the signal coming in is stereo, not 5.1. Pro logic II upconverts stereo to either 5.1 or 7.1, whichever you have setup. If you turn your station to a known stereo broadcast (non-HD) you should see the same thing on your receiver.
