Ya know, democracy only really works in civilized, modern soceities. Trying to bring it to bass ackwards 3rd world countries doesn't work. The worst part is that dictatorial regimes use democracy as a means to rise to power then trash the system.

Look at the NAZI's, they used democratic elections to rise to power, then once they got power, they sacked germany's entire democratic system.

Now, its happening in Kuwait. Kuwait is a very rich, democratic country. Here's what's happening, a bunch of hard-core fundy muslums started having 10 babies or more per family, and raised them all as narrow minded, allah thumping fundamentalists. Kuwaits non fundamentalist muslums, are very liberal as far as muslums go, the women shop at the Gap and wear blue jeans and tank tops. They are losing their voting power, and soon, probably in the next election or two, the fundamentalist movement will win the elections and as soon as they get into office, they'll start persecuting all those Gap shopping girls and their families, and it is gonna be a bloodbath.

Democracy is great, but it can be a horrible tool when used for evil reasons. These fundamentalist muslums (NOT muslums in general) are a cancer, and they need to be cut out.

They take countries like Iran who was a fairly modern, moderate country when the Shah was in power, and they turn them into brutal, medeival regimes.

I thought I saw on 60 minutes that they were elected. Well, they WERE the choice of the majority of the people at that time, that is for sure.

I wouldn't say they were the 'choice' of the majority of people. They were the strongest faction and in 1996 they took the city of Kabul.

I agree. If given a choice between a democratically elected, pro-terrorist government and a millitary anti-terrorist government, I'd go with the latter. We didn't start this war to bring democracy to Afghanistan. Democracy comes from within. The purpose of this war is to make sure Sept. 11 doesn't happen again.

Germany was a civilized, modern society. The failure there was a lack of checks and balances like the US has, to prevent an official from ousting people from other leadership offices...

"allah thumping fundamentalists"

Allah means God. Try Quran.

was germany a civilized modern soceity at the time the NAZI's came to power. The country was decimated after WWI, people were paying for a loaf of bread with 5 wheelbarrels full of a worthless currency, and poverty was rampant.

that was in early 1920s. By late 20s they were better. Germany became a dictatorship because they were utterly humiliated in WWI (you may disagree, but there were no bad guys or good guy sin WWI, there were just countries fighting). If I remember my history correctly, the french and british demanded enourmous payments from germany, plus banned arms production and such. Hitler just used people's hate to gain power.

Anyway, back to your main point, yes I happen to agree in general, though I don't know much about Kuwait in particular.

Democracy didnt work in Germany because of the check and balance concept-although it was important- it ceased to work because of the ridiculous infractions that were put on them because of the U.S and the Versailles treaty :Q
