...why does the former insurance company ask for the latters policy number? I mean why do they need to know that?

I have Progressive - want to change to State Farm. SF wants my Progressive Policy #. Any idea why they need that?

They want it for 2 things:

They want to verify that your coverage is current. If you don't have insurance currently, most all companies either won't insure you or will charge you a much higher rate.

They check to see how many claims you have had in the past x number of years and adjust their rates accordingly.

I would just tell them the name of the company..they may just use it for internal marketing issues..

bozo1 is right. They wanna make sure you had insurance right before coming to their company becase if you didnt' have insurance they can charge you a much higher rate.

I didnt have car insurance before and I pay $570 / 6 mon for full coverage, but if i had insurance for at least 6 months prior then my rate would have been $307 / 6 mon for full coverage
