When can we expect to see AMD Geodes?

I was just about to build a fileserver around a Via C3 1ghz platform and discovered the press release for the new AMD Geode low-power CPUs. It's been about a month since they were released and "available" but I can't find any place stocking them on either PriceGrabber or PriceWatch. Has anybody read anything that gives an ETA for a street date? I can't wait too long here but I'd rather go with the AMD than the Cyrix.

35W AXP mobile and FLEX ATX mobo underclcoked to 1.0Ghz it will be 3x faster than cyrix at 1.0 AND use less power. It will be a bit larger but not much. The power useage is 12W at this speed vs. 18w for via.

if you are looking for low power and you dont need speed underclock it to 800mhz and get 11watts(at 1.1 vcore)

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm pretty sold on the AMD Geode NX 1500@6W Processor at this point. Anybody else know when they'll show?

That would be a dream come true for silent SFF system :) Home theater systems would be a nice home for processors like that

It's possible right now and to have good performance with a 35W moblie XP. Underclcoked to 1Ghz it only uses 8-11W. I have the calcs if you wish to see them. Anyway I'm curently running a 2600MXP @1.2 in a very quiet setup with passive HS with only PSU fan. If I had to have total silence and could fiqure out this HTPC stuff silverstone makes a 300W passive cooled PSU but it's pricey at $230.

Alright, I'm tired of waiting for the Geodes (and the 1200mhz Via's). Where would one get one of these mobo/athlonxp mobile combos and about how much would they cost?

Dont forget mobile p4's are also available. a 2.0ghz p4 run 1.3v running it at 12*133 (default desktop multiplier) should allow 1.2v or lower. I currently have a p4 1.7 mobile chip at this speed and its reported as 25 watts which in my ezgo book pc is very cool

Newegg; costs less than $170.

I agree...the 35 watters should be perfect. Grab an XP-M 2000 or 2200 35 watt off newegg. I believe the 2200 is only $77...then spend another $50-75 on the board of your choice. Although, when picking a board you may want to check around and make sure it will do the low voltages you are wanting to run.

Thanks for all the input! To tell you the truth, I ended up going with a 1ghz EPIA. The server's been up and running for a few days, and with two hard drives in it it's idling at about 30W. It's running FreeBSD and i'm actually surprised at how quick it runs; compiling takes a bit longer than the AthlonXP 2500+ that it replaced (as should be expected), but as a fileserver it's right on par in terms of xfer rate and responsiveness. The board cost $150 + shipping from Directron. I may have gotten better compile-times at more wattage w/ the AthlonXP Mobile, but to tell you the truth, I'm feeling some old-school satisfaction in knowing that my fileserver is being run by a Cyrix. I mean, come on... it's a freaking CYRIX! ;)

LOL, I think I have a Cyrix 6x86 PR200 sitting in some cabinet at work. I still have (within arms reach) a VIA C3 800, 866 and 933, all Ezra core 1.35w.

Remember their earlier chips? Both IBM and Cyrix had chips named something like 486SXL that ran in 386SX motherboards with a 16 bit memory interface (like a 286?). IBM even made a x2 version, something like a 486SX2-50 or something like that. Those chips were soldered onto the motherboard and were about 1CM square.
