When buying raw meat/poultry...

I've had people tell me a few different things. Some say that they wash the meat straight out of the styrofoam packs, whereas some don't. Is there really any reason to, seeing that it all eventually gets cooked over the stove?
 
With chicken you should rinse under cold water and dry with paper towels. I don't think it's necessary with pork or beef.
