prime example: if you buy someone a cd as a gift, do you get one from a musical group that you like (maybe in hopes that the recipient will like it too)? Or do you try to find one that you know the recipient likes, even if you don't?

Depends on the person. Some people I just buy things that they may or may not like. I don't care.
With others, I really put some effort into finding out what they want and getting that for them.

Um, i buy what i think they would like... unless it's a Secret Santa, where i don't know the person, then i'll pick what i would like.

not at all. i buy what the person wants, or what i think they want.... or what i hope that want.

I don't buy CDs for people unless I know for a fact they enjoy death metal. Otherwise there is a 100% chance I will get them stuff they do not like.
