How does age affect the quality of the cristal? Is newer better or is older better? Also, what is the average price for a decent bottle? Anyone know of any good sites where I can buy some?

No kidding. If someone is offering a free swig, I'll drink it. If I have to buy it, I'll drink something else.

I have to agree, there's definitely a point of diminishing returns with champagne. Everything pretty much tastes the same over roughly $40 per bottle.

Do you even have money for that kind of thing? It's pretty stupid to drop $100 on a bottle of hooch if you're working fast food or something.

Cristal really is too expensive, Compared to Dom Perignon, there really isn't THAT much of a difference, don't buy something not from the provence of Champagne, but to answer your question, champagne starts to lose its flavor after a few years, I'm not absolutely positive on whats the best amount of time to keep a bottle (wine connosieurs?) but I don't think I would go past 1995 for Champagne.

Cristal is not worth your time. The people who drink it now do not have the tastebuds developed to discern the woodsy flavor between a bottle aged 4 years and one aged 10 years.

I know what started it. Some thug with too much flash wanted to impress a girl/homies by asking the waiter, "what is the most expensive bottle ya got?" It is not about taste to them but price. Fine, let them spend their money.

But if want something (I'm guessing for valentine's day?) to impress, why don't you take her to a wine class or just go to a reputable wine store (one that won't rip you off) and ask for several bottles of champagne to create your own wine tasting class at home. That way she'll apreciate that you are thinking of giving her something to experience instead of just spending a lot of money on just one day for her. (what about the other 364 days?)

Cristal is really good - I've had it a couple of times - but if you have to ask questions like these I probably wouldn't bother ;)

I don't know where you are, but the best place I know to buy champagne is D&M Liquors in San Francisco. They have a web site and I believe they ship. http://www.dandm.com/
If you want Cristal they have it at $149.99 for the 1996 - but I would recommend going for one of their staff pick vintage champagnes, which tend to be from small Champagne Houses

Is $150 a good price for cristal? I've seen it from$200 to $1200. $150 seems a bit cheap? What's the difference between the $150 bottle and the $1200 bottle?

Agree on the class idea. It's much better to show than tell; in other words, let them determine what most suits their palate independent of price.

$1050. Seriously. Most people don't have the palate to discern a $10 wine from a $100 wine.

I haven't the foggiest. I rarely drink champagne myself so on the rare occasions I buy it I'll get Moet White Star. I can't see spending more than that (~$30) unless it's a very very special occasion. Maybe if I get a few big raises...
