When at work, what do you do to make people think you are working?

Let's say your boss walks past your door and you're doing squat.

My favorite method is the "fake type". It's worked for me every time, and is quite convincing if done correctly.

stare intently at the screen like you are metally trying to solve a problem....or paint fake eyes on your eyelids.

I leave the Spam Filter or IDP program in the background. Hit the change app button on the mouse, and I'm good to go.

I always have a manual opened on my desk, whenever anyone walk by I make it look as though I am reading it. 🙂

I used to start using my calculator with a puzzled look on my face. That and muffled mumblings littered with work lingo.

Now, nothing. No boss on site.

Walk around alot, sometimes aimlessly. I like to get water, walk back, drink water, walk to go pee, then get more water, etc...

I'm so busy alll day!!

I click on another screen like explorer or web based interface program or I leave Newegg on or something because I always order from there.

I am the boss, minus the Boss. So I have to worry about when flunkies come in and catch me mid-snooze after lunch (which is something I am A-OK with, even for them) ... so I also leave the oh-so-impressive ... `tail -f /var/log/maillog` running. It looks like I'm kicking butt and taking names, even though I'm sleeping. It also let's me say something like "Oh, I'm letting that run for a few minutes" ...

heh, I love my job. 😀

outlook is my default 'oh crap here comes someone who thinks im working' app. i've been getting lazy though, and just let the boss see me browsing AT, the avatars are the only give-away, but i think i mentioned it was for help with fixing IT problems and they really really need me here 😉

Keep my email client open and take advantage of the fact that WinXP groups the taskbar buttons together so you can't see what I have open in Firefox by looking at my taskbar when I switch to something else. Comes in handy when someone comes up to my desk to talk to me.

I also disable images in Firefox for ATOT to get around the avatar problem. 😛
