When are we going to see positive numbers in our 401k's?

I can't even remember the last time my ROR has been better than -10%. I know the economy is bad but when the hell are we going to see an end to this?

Mine is up 8% so far for the year. Find a better fund to put your money in.

Hmm..I'll have to do some more research, unfortunately, Fidelity doesn't have a large amount of options.

The great thing about 401k savings is that if you are doing it right you're in it for the long term... in which case a little dip while the economy is bad is nothing to scoff at.

I'm no financial expert, but it seems to me that if the economy sucks then EVERYTHING is down right now. It'll work out in the end because if whoever you have managing it is doing it right, they're able to buy stocks and such quite low right now and when things pick up, you'll see your return.

I'm down for the year. That's just the way things are right now, but they'll turn around in a year or two, and in the meantime your contributions are buying extra shares since prices per share are down.

What fund is up 8% YTD?

I find it very hard to believe you are able to consistently pick funds that beat the market year in and year out. If so, you should be making billions as a fund manager.

Every single fund expect for 2 (both bond funds) are in the negative for YTD in my companies 401k. Luckily I put all of my money into one of the bond funds last year and I am at .56% YTD

he probably made most of that during the little spike we had earlier. then moved it back out into conservative funds before we hit the shitter again.

I'm up a few points so far this year, but I have my 401k (and other investments) in the hands of a competent money manager. I have quarterly meetings, at least, and we evaluate the direction and results; if it's not in agreement with the plans, we do something else. It's a nice balance between active and passive management.

I figured the first two replies were trolls posts. I don't know anyone that is above water at this point.

Unless you invested in oil... oil is always above water. ;)

Care to elaborate?

meh, I'm spread all over the place so maybe that's why I'm up for the year. For sure most things are negative, but the rest aren't.

Excellent. If he knows exactly when to get into and out of the stock market, he should be a billionaire by now.

The only thing doing well in my diversified set of funds is one "social awareness" fund and a small cap fund. Most everything else is dropping. In years past I've had good returns from international funds, but those are taking a nose dive too.

401k's being down now is about the best possible thing for most workers. That probably includes you Cdubneeddeal.

Suppose stock find XYZ was at $10/share last year. Suppose XYZ will be $100/share when you retire. Ok now for the difficult question. Would you rather,

(A) buy XYZ each month now for $20/share (positive numbers in the 401k), or
(B) buy XYZ each month now for $5/share (negative numbers in the 401k).

I'll let you sit and think about that one for a while.
