when are we going to have discrete left and right sound chanels?

I guess that would make it 8.1. I don't even like the sourround speakers, I just want a 4.1 setup with center, rear, left, and right.

not too sure if you can buy a 4.1 system with center chanel. Usually its 4.1 with front, rear, sub. I guess you could get a 5.1 for the same results, but with the added bonus of a sub.

correct me if I'm wrong......

I'm asking for discrete left and right. I can always not hook up the sourround speakers.

Sorry...mis-read the post ( I'm into the sauce right now). But that little jack you pulg into your sound card from the speaker separates lefts and rights for you....so it is true left and right chanels.

d00d, your  all up in this...right and left channels ARE discrete...if you hear a car drive by in a 5.1 setup, you dont hear it on the right AND left at the same time...

Wait, are you talking about 7.1 setups? I've seen a diagram for 7.1 where besides front/right, front/left, rear/right, rear/left, center, and sub you also have middle/right & middle/left.

I never really noticed. most sound seems to be coming from the center.

DVDs? Most are mixed that way (most of the sound in center) but the left & right are still working fine.
