Even if it isn't a completely new system, we're at the very least overdue for a revamp... DS Ultralite or something...I don't think they'll ditch the dual screen format, but I do think they'll beef up the specs and features - and like with the GB Color, GBA, and even the Wii, it's own unique games could very well require the newer system, yet be perfectly backwards compatible with the DS
Let's see... the Gameboy Color uses a z80 CISC processor
Gameboy Advanced uses an ARM 7 RISC processor and the z80 as a coprocessor to maintain BC with the Gameboy Color (performs similarly to the 68k Processor on the SNES)
Nintendo DS uses an Arm 9E processor and an ARM 7 co-processor to maintain BC with the Gameboy Advanced (performs similarly to the N64)
Following Nintendo trends, the next system:
DSII uses a processor equivalent to the PowerPC 750CXe processor and an ARM 9E coprocessor.
It seems like Nintendo really likes lean processors that are good at number crunching that tend to do more at a low mhz but aren't as good at general processors in terms of branch predictions and simultaneous threading.
