Apple may be finally preparing to ship both the new In-Ear headphones and new 24" LED Cinema Displays to customers. Apple pre-announced the products at their September and October media events, respectively.

According to sources, Apple has just today end-of-life'd the old Apple 23" Cinema Display and old In-Ear headphones. This means that Apple will no longer be supplying these products to resellers. This is generally considered a sign that the new products will be shipping soon.

Apple describes the new In-Ear headphones as being "engineered for superior acoustic accuracy, balance, and clarity" and were originally promised in October. Meanwhile, the 24" Cinema Display uses an LED screen for the first time, and incorporates the new Mini Displayport found on the new Apple notebooks.

If Apple does the dual-driver thing correctly, these headphones would be comparable to Shure and UE headphones at the $150-$250 range. The frequency response graph looks promising, and since I'm not an audiophile, my standards are not too high.

Compatibility

The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation). Audio is supported by all iPod models..

The jury is still out on this. Until we actually see the headphone connector and someone actually tries it out on an iPhone, we won't know for sure.

The Apple discussion boards have some threads on this.

Ok, I think the new headphones might be coming out this week...maybe on Tuesday?

I just plugged in my new iPod Nano 4G and it's just prompted me to download and install a new update, and the release notes now say "Support for new headphones"...

Well, the audio should work. It's the mic and remote that might not, though I would hope that if it uses the regular 3 conductor mini-jack like the current iPhone earbuds, then the mic would work as well.

Exactly, the audio out should work just fine on both your ipod and MacBook. Since niether of them have jacks that support a plug with a mic-in then that will not work on them, and the remote probably will not either.

Apparently, the new MacBooks do support the remote, but not the mic.
