When a monitor doesn't turn on and the LED will not even light up what is the most frequent problem with it?

I have tested about 36 old monitors lately to see if they were working. I have found that frequently when they do not work they usally do not turn on when you push in the On and OFF switch. The LED does not even come on. It is as if there is no power coming to the switch. What part in the monitior is usally at fault when this happens? Is it possibly a fuse? Also the second most frequent occurrence when they do not work is that diagonal lines show up across the screen. What part in the monitor is most frequently at fault when this happens. Thanks for your help.

I have had "no power" situation twice (both times it was with Viewsonics) once it was the fuse and the next time it was the switch itself had gone bad.

being a monitor tech... he's right... the fuse, then the switch...if it's still dead the switch-mode P.S could have failed or the shutdown circuit either failed or detected a failure in 1 of the other circuits

Kamiam, if I ever need a monitor fixed, where should I go in general, and what kind of technician credentials should I look for? Is a TV shop OK? I'm reluctant to use a computer shop because I've learned that many of the people who work there can't do component-level repairs, or they can do them no better than I can, which is really bad.

Well.... I just got news from a friend that his Viewsonic's power LED came on but there was no display... and the Viewsonic local agent said that the Tube was KAPUT... DEAD....

I will never again buy Viewsonic's monitors. Here TVM monitors were the rage untill Viewsonic entered the market about 3 years back. All the old TVM's are still running fine (they are all old interlaced monitors) but most of the Viewsonics started giving trouble in 2 years time, I live in the tropics so maybe Viewsonic's monitors are not tropicalised. Now the monitors in demand here are the Samsungs and LGs.
