When a CPU is knocked ajar, does it degrade in clock speed?

no, "bumping" around should NOT lower your clock speed...

what does the bios report is the clock speed on boot-up?

also, you could try downloading sisoft sandra and see what it reports your cpu speed as

Yeah I have that at home, unfortunately I'm not home ATM. I'll need to reboot to see if bios' reports the right speed.. thanks for the advice. Can't do either right now.. I'm working and need it on. :(

Don't the mobile P3's have some kind of 'speed step' feature? I can't remember for sure, but you might want to check on that...something along the lines of the CPU runs at a lower speed when extra speed's not needed so your battery doesn't drain as fast...

Yes, the mobile P3's use speed step. Depending on how it's setup in the bios, it will run at a lower speed when on batteries and full speed when connected to AC. You should be able to set it up for full speed when on batteries, but your battery won't last as long.

I'm 'tapped' in (AC powered). I think it's XP reporting false numbers. The applications seem to be abit sluggish tho I suspect that may be because of all the junk I have on my HDD.

it also slows down depending on CPU temps. If it get too hot then it really slows down. How long has it been on, and is the bottom laying flat on the table? See if you can raise the back end a bit so that air can flow at the bottom if that makes any difference.
