I still say that you should simply see if you are bottlenecked now, and decide if it is worth upgrading if you are. If you aren't bottlenecked, why does it matter if a game you aren't playing would bottleneck you? Do you even play in a way that you care to have more FPS than you have? While I require/desire 75+ FPS, others only care about 60 or lower.

I am in a strange spot personally because my main game is BF1 now and I'm not sure a 6700K would help vs my 3930k. Testing has shown that the game scales with more cores. It might be kind of a wash. Also, even with SLI disabled my FPS is around 75, sometimes more but rarely much less. When SLI works, the game is close to 100 or pegged at it much of the time, which is my refresh max. So...the most depressing thing is that there isn't much a new CPU can offer me. I will likely jump on a skylakeX, but like you said its going to have 2 year old cores. Bah CPU's are boring these days.
There are some games that rely more on single threaded performance and it would help some with those, but its not a huge deal or anything. Waiting beyond skylakeX is quite a wait. I could grab an 8 core skylake and if it sits comfortably at 4.6 I could forget about CPU's for 8 years after that I bet. I'm not concerned about PCI-E 4.0. 3.0@x16 is plenty for the next decade I'm pretty certain.

Also, for those without an MC close by, Fry's was advertising the 6700K for $269. Not sure how long that deal lasts.

I hear what you're saying. I've been debating the 6700K ever since it launched. I held out because my 2600K still performed well, and I wanted to see what BW-E offered. Well, IMO, BW-E was a huge disappointment and I didn't see any major issues with my 2600K in the intervening months. That, and the fact that my gaming isn't what it used to be, makes me want to hold out for Ice Lake. Though I hope I am wrong, I am pretty sure I'm going to be disappointed in SKL-X so unless my system dies, Ice Lake looks more and more likely for me. I won't be surprised of Cannonlake, Coffee Lake, and even Ice Lake are delayed further, however.

Per my signature machines, I see we're using the same P8Z68-V Pro for the 2600K. I may want to PM you later as I iron out some quirks" and prepare the use of the system for my 91-year-old moms.

On the positive side, if per the rumours 8-core 16T Zen drops for $350-500 USD, we may see Intel drop prices on 8-core Skylake from $1099 to $699-799. Ya, you are in a strange spot because BF1 actually scales well with more GPUs but you swore off SLI for your next upgrade. That means if you get a single 1080Ti, it won't really be a big upgrade over 980Ti SLI for BF1.

EA confirms 2017 release for Star Wars Battlefront 2
I have a feeling SW:BF2 (or w/e it's called) will be largely based on the same engine and run well.

We shouldn't expect the next BF game until 2018-2019. As crazy as it sounds, unless you are streaming 4K from Netflix, you can probably use your 980Ti SLI and 3930K until October-November 2018. If 1080TI OC ~ 980Ti SLI, maybe sell 980Ti and get one of those cards but that's about it. I have a feeling you'll get the upgrade bug once 6-8 core SKL-X shows up though :).

*When I was talking about PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 3.0 x8, I was more referring to future upgrade path for Samsung 970 Pro/Evo, etc.

I would argue that any game that runs bad on a 2600k@4.5 will also run less than ideal on any CPU out there. If a game gets 40fps on a 2600K then its not going to be awesome on a 6700K either. It means the game is poorly threaded and runs like crap. The CPUs are not so far apart to make a world of difference. If a game is bottlenecked by an OC'd 2600k, then a 6700k may barely be adequate itself. If a faster CPU than skylake came out today, then people tomorrow would be saying how the 6700k is a bottleneck because the new CPU gets more FPS is certain situations.
I claim that the 2600K @ 4.5ghz and above is still an ideal gaming CPU. Sandy Bridge is beautiful. Say it.
Skylake have 30-40% more IPC than sandy bridge at same clock(you need fast DDR4 for that 3400-4000mhz)So if you have 45fps on 2600k/4.5ghz you will have 60-63Fps with 6700k at 4.5ghz(in cpu bottleneck scene)
