Green Cove Springs, FL (AHN)?Officials say a wheelchair-bound woman who swung knives and a hammer at relatives and police died after being shocked by a stun gun.

Police Chief Robert Musco says police first tried to talk to 56-year-old Emily Marie Delafield into dropping the weapons before they used the Taser to subdue her Monday. After the electric jolt, Delafield lost consciousness and later died at Orange Park Medical Center in Florida.

About 7,000 of the nation's 18,000 police agencies had Tasers last year, and they were used by police more than 70,000 times.

Amnesty International counted 61 U.S. deaths following Taser use last year, but Taser International officials disputes that count, saying there had been no such official conclusion linking the deaths to the use of Tasers.

I think it would be obvious that a woman in a wheel chair might have some medical issues. They must have used the taser for expediency. Seriously, just keep everybody AWAY from the wheel chair.

Oh no, more fuel for them to ban LEO from using tasers. Back to the trusty .40 I guess.

The police should ha done like the russians. Get the big needle out and sedate her. Or use a nerve gas or something. The outcome could not be any worser.

Actually, there have been more deaths and injuries by the over use of taser guns. The problem is the law enforcement officer needs to know when to stop tasing! Even a healthy person can go into cardiac arrest if tased too long.

I wonder if she would have survived if they could have just found a way to overpower her?

Let's have a round of applause for heresay and conjecture!

The Taser has not conclusively been deemed to be the cause of death in ANY circumstance. In such events the cause of death is generally attributed to "excited delerium," as they often involve the use of illicit stimulants. The taser emits such a low amperage that there is very little chance of it ever directly affecting the heart.

Need I remind you that proper procedure dictates that when someone is swinging a weapon, such as a knife or hammer, at a police officer that they are to use LETHAL force?

You do NOT use lethal force and target a limb. Real life isn't like the movies.

I guess they didn't because she was an old wheelchair bound woman

How in the world do you shoot out spokes on the wheels with a gun? If you're trying that you're probably going to end up having a richocet that kills the person in the chair. And how does a spike strip help against a solid rubber tire?

Ya people die after being tased but the taser has nothing to do with it. Or that deadly force is authorized in a situation like this. I could just see the headline: Police shoot a wheel chair bound woman holding a knife.
