Wheel Balancing?

What exactly does it fix? My car feels a little shakey - is it worth it to get the tires balanced? Should I get all 4 done or just the front two? Thanks!

an off balance wheel will vibrate the axle, and the car, cause tire wear, and can be dangerous if really bad. It will also shorten the lifetime of your bearings/axles. I have mine balanced every 6 months. Rotate the tires every other oil change.

The guy at the local garage said that I only need to balance the front wheels - is that true or should I do all 4?

the fronts will probably be more noticable, since their vibration will transmit through the steering. If these tires have reasonable life left in them, then a balance for all 4 would be in order. Rotate also - if you haven't done so in the past 5K - 8K miles.

On a FWD car, the front wheels are the most important to have balanced since they are connected to both the drivetrain and to the steering, but all four wheels still need to be balanced. Otherwise you'll get weird tire wear.
