Wheel Balancing Question

I must have hit something or a weight came off, don't know what, but my tires are definitely out of balance. All of a sudden I am getting major vibration when going > 50MPH.

Questions are,

1. Will it hurt anthing if I don't fix it?

2. What can I expect to pay to fix it. I want to get it fixed cheaply, Like 50 bucks max.

Yeah, getting your tires rebalanced is pretty cheap. You'd be advised to figure out which of the tires is unbalances and just get that one rebalanced if you are worried about cost. Otherwise most places I know will do all 4 for 45-60 total.

Your vibration might be caused by tire out of round too. They'll be able to tell you if it has a flat spot or bulge when they try to balance it. You'll have to replace the tire if that is the case.

If you don't repair the unbalanced tire it will wear out quickly and need to be replaced before the rest of your tires. If you are able to determine which tire it is you should, depending on where you live, be able to get it rebalanced for around $10.

Or a wheel could be out-of-round.

You could of threw a weight or bent the wheel or maybe both. However, it's most likely the weight. Take it to the shop where you originally mounted the tires. Most shops (if you bring the recipt) will honor and rebalance for free. It's a pretty cheap procedure anyway. They can tell you on the machine if the wheel is bent as well.

Get this, the problem totally vanished today!

It must have been like a rock or chunk of ice that got wedged in one of the tires and managed to work itself out. Booya!

in that case watch out for leaks.

Driving with your tires out of balance might cause you tire to scallop a little bit. Not as much as an alignment problem though.

it can also wear out suspension components because of the increased vibration and cycle loading. things like tie rod ends and ball joints. glad it fixed itself.

A chunk of packed snow or ice will definitely throw off the balance. Glad for ya that it "fixed itself!"
