Whay can't someone come up with a camera that can make calls?

and not the other way around? I've had my evo 3d for 2 months now and I can safely say the camera is still as useless as the one on my old touch pro. it's only good for still life - literally. Any slight movement and *SMEAR*. Nope, hold very still.

Verizon had a model a while back that was touted as "the Camera that can make phone calls". It was a pretty high-end (at the time) digital camera with all kinds of controls, f-stop, ISO, lens apature, it even had a hardware shutter, IIRC. It was a flip-phone, and the display rotated around and flipped closed to be the LCD viewfinder.

Cellphone cameras are "good enough" for Facebook pics, and that's all people care about these days.

my old iphone 3GS with iOS 4 was a killer fast camera. better than my kodak digital camera. with iOS 4 it snapped pictures very fast letting me take some awesome pictures of my kids.

my HTC Inspire is better quality than my iphone but very slow and i'm thinking about going back to iphone

The problem is that a device that takes very good pictures and functions well as a cell phone would be very expensive, and not worth the manufacturer's time/money to produce because it's a niche product. There's a demand for it, but not enough to justify spending wads of cash to produce it.

Because the normal consumer do not want it.
A camera that can take good pictures are bulky.
People rather carry something nice and small that is sufficient for taking picture than a bulky device that can make calls.
Simple as that.
Manufacturers have tried and they don't sell.

My wife had a Nokia 6220 Classic. 5MP with a "Carl Zeiss" lens, a slidable lens cover and a flash. It took pretty good photos - there was no zoom, but the image quality was pretty decent.

My Nokia N82 had xenon flash and blew away the 5MP shooters like the Droid and SGS cameras still. Meh. US phones really didn't have good cameras for a long time.

Sounds like you have a defect or do not know how to work the settings as my evo4g camera is leaps and bounds better than my old touch pro.

As far as the 3d thing,it is a release version and will needs software / hardware updates / grades.

I think half of the problem is that most manufacturers try to cram in sensors with as many MP as possible, regardless if the quality suffers as a result. Most consumers are complete idiots and will blindly assume that 8 of something is better than 5, even if the output is some amorphous blob of color only vaguely related to what you were trying to capture.

The only way this will change is if someone actually does put a good sensor in their phone and slaps some kind of fancy marketing term on it.

If my plan is to take photos, I'll take my DSLR with a good lens.

If I'm just going somewhere and happen to see something, I'll just use my phone.

There's no way a phone is going to be a better camera than my DSLR, or any dedicated camera. It lacks all the features with easy to access dedicated buttons. Heck even smart 'phones' are removing the phone 'dial' and 'hangup' buttons.

Not to mention that a phone doesn't have the space/size it requires for the good sensor or optics..

I would sacrifice Mps for better quality of the actual photo.

Most people don't walk around with an expensive camera in their day to day lives. They probably have one for when they go on vacations, but otherwise it stays at home. However, that doesn't mean that there won't be a few occasional times when a person needs to take a picture of something while not on vacation.

Exactly! Ergo, most people are not photographers. For the casual, occasional snapshotter, a P&S phone camera should suffice.

I own both a DSLR and a point-and-shoot. The DSLR is for vacations/special occasions. The point-and-shoot is for occasions when I don't feel like carrying a big ass camera around. My smartphone is for spur of the moment stuff when I don't have the point-and-shoot on me.

Thus, it would be tremendously useful to me to have a smartphone with a quality camera built in. The Nokia N8's camera is supposedly the best you can get on a smartphone and is similar to a mid-range point-and-shoot in terms of image quality. I'm hoping the N9/Sea Ray has a comparable camera on it. It would mean one less device to carry around with me.

Nokia N8 is supposedly the tops in terms of cameras. Of course, you're taking a big hit to the phone quality to go with Symbian (and I'd say the situation with Windows Phone isn't much better...)
