whats's the difference between a Q9550 and Q9550s?

Power use. The S versions are lower power (TDP 95w for regular, 65w for S version), that's the reason for the extra cost.
If you don't feel too concerned about power use, then the regular is fine.

If the lower power version is compatible with that mobo, might be a good deal. IIRC a lot of the P35 based mobos had voltage drop that would get worse after a while, seems logical that this would be assuaged somewhat with a less thirsty CPU.

It bears more research though, I am just recalling things I've heard secondhand about those issues.

The Q9550s we're tested to not clock any higher thanthe regular Q9550 so the sole benefit of the s is slightly lower electricity bill.

I honestly wouldn't buy either of those, way too expensive. I just put together an entire budget system with an Athlon II X4 for under $400, and you could probably get a Phenom II 955/AM3 board/4Gb DDR3 for the cost of that C2Q.

I'd pick up something like a Q9400 for significantly less than the Q9550, or get a new cpu/motherboard combo. It's just my opinion though.

not sure the q9400 is supported in this board, as this list shows it as test and the q9550 is. this for my daughter system.

as for myself, I will probable get one of the amd 6 core chips for my asus M3A32-MVP DELUXE/WIFI-AP which i know is supported.

the only real niche the S series CPUs fall into is for slim rackmount server, or all-in-one desktop PC, or maybe mini-itx build or HTPC build.

i had troubles with the IP35-e and my old q9550. was not perfect, even with latest beta BIOS.

after using a beta BIOS on my MSI board also with P35 chipset, P35-neo2FR (aka value platinum), i was able to get the q9550 to use the full 8.5 multi instead of 8.0 that it was using.

i would stay away from the Q9000 series, and be cautious about any 45nm quad on the abit p35 boards though.

I used to love ABIT board, but there's a reason they are gone, their IP35 offerings weren't really all that good after long term use. Especially how they work with C2Quad. I've been running Q9450 on Asus board, and it's been perfect for couple of years.
