Whats's best use of two IDE ports?

Current config is 1hdd @7200rpm as Prim. Mas, Cd-burner as prim. slav. 2nd hdd @5400 as sec. mas. and cd drive as sec. slave. I know its best to not slave anything off of a high speed drive but I don't burn stuff alot so does it really matter, or should i just get a controller card and set the hard drives up on that. I do quite a bit of gaming so i want all the performance i can get out of my primary hdd. thanks.

I always heard that the slowest device on the chain will determine the speed. I read on here yesterday that it is only true if you are using both devices at the same time, your fast HD will have to wait for your slow CDR if you happen to be using them at the same time. I am happy to hear this, I have always put two HD on the primary and DVD and CDRW on secondary. I am going to rework this and put CDRW as 2nd device on primary and DVD as second device on slave. This makes alot of sense for copying CDs (which I don't usually do, I archive stuff, but now I will lay out the CD on 2nd HD). So it looks like your setup is fine the way it is.

First off, there is no performance hit on an ATA100 hard drive when an ATA33 device is attached to it since all new devices use independent controllers for this. There is a topic in the FAQs that talks about this. With this in mind, I personally keep my DVD-ROM slaved to my primary hard drive and an internal Zip100 slaved to my CD-RW on the secondary channel. This enables me to burn from both the hard drive and the DVD-ROM drive pretty easily. I think your current setup is pretty good and when you burn you should either go "on-the-fly" or from your secondary hard drive since they are on the IDE channel opposite the CD-RW.
