I just want a simple shell-integrated right click option to scan files for viruses and not keep a ton of resource-heavy stuff running 24/7. I do not need active protection in an AV program.

There are so many out there and I'm trying a few out, but what's your favorite? Preferably something free...

You ought to be able to disarm the real-time scanner on practically any antivirus software, so the field is still wide open based on your criteria. You can find some detection test results here for a bunch of antivirus software, and Schadenfroh has a roundup you can check out here with more detection info too.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using Antivir XP (found it on Schadenfroh's page) and it seems to be just what I've been looking for.

A friend of mine installed Norton and man, does it ever have a lot of bloat to it. I had no idea there was a free AV program that was so efficient like this.

I have tried the free versions of AVG and Avast!. I chose Avast! because I wanted seamless proactive e-mail support for Thunderbird, something earlier versions of AVG had issues with.

Cannot say which is better at finding virii because I've never had one :).

I've just changed form AVG to Antivir since my computers got infected using AVG.
