I like...
.) Rainbow Six (Awesome, squad based tactical gameplay. Fast, smooth, no lag. Before this game, I never liked FPS's at all. It free'd my mind to this genre and it has the most incredible gameplay of any FPS I've ever played. What's even more awesome is that you can co-op and deathmatch. FUN FUN FUN!)
.) Quake II (Because of the above game, I decided to give FPS's another try... so I got into this game (which was all the rage at that point in time). Probably has the best pure gameplay of any action FPS ever. If cheaters didn't riddle all the servers (read: red chick characters always using railguns is the dead giveaway) I'd still be playing this game. To be honest, I've never even seen a game have more cheaters in my life... it's insane!)
.) Unreal (The best single player FPS game I've ever played to this day (I say this because you could co-op together through it with anyone on the internet)! I co-op'ed all the way through this game AT LEAST 7 times and loved it! Mulitplayer deathmatch was below average though.)
.) Tribes (Took me a loooooooong time to appreciate this game. Luckily, I got it as a gift, otherwise I probably would have taken it back. After (honestly) about 100 hours of gameplay... I FINALLY figured out why this game was so cool, and to this day... still play it alot. Very fun!)
.) Team Fortress (A modofication to Half-Life (which doesn't in itself make my list) that started with one of the Quake games and worked it's way over to the HL engine. This is a great (and extremely fun) mod. I've played A TON of hours with it and it's just got some magic. Team based (which I prefer) and it requires everyone on your team to help. Very VERY fun!)
.) Unreal Tournament (I still play this game quite a bit. It has very good multiplayer deathmatch play... very balanced. Also, the new game modes (domination, assault, last man standing etc etc etc) give this game something most of the other FPS's don't have... and that being variety. Constant updates (additional skins, maps, mods etc) from the game makers keep me playing it constantly. IMO this is a much better *GAME* than Quake III (which is it's main competition in popularity these days) in any and every regard.)
.) Wheel of Time (This is a MASSIVELY underated game! It's gameplay is different but very much worth your time to figure out. Very fun!)
.) Rogue Spear (Not as good as the first because it's has lag problems and doesn't run near as smooth as the first. For some reason... it's just missing a little of the magic of Rainbow Six.)
.) Counterstrike (Another modification to Half-Life that tries to have some realistic aspects to its gameplay only to have a lot of nonrealistic attributes also. This mod needs to figure out what it wants to be. Might have ranked higher if not for two things. One being that it is setup for modem players to thrive while punishing broadband players with its networking model and massive player prediction. Two is the fact that it has more cheater's than honest players. Overall very fun though when you find the right group of players.)
.) Quake III (Not a bad game. Graphics are REALLY nice, which is it's only really saving grace. Lots iof things plague this game (to many to list). One lies in the fact that weapon damage is just way to low. Three rockets to kill someone? C'mon... that's just lame. This game just caters to modem players way to much for me, and I just don't care for that. The game is a little to fast also, but still can be an enjoyable alternative to the other FPS's (read: for a change of pace). A little bit plagued by some cheaters also... so beware.)
