So I'm in the market for a used four door sedan and the A3 caught my eye. I'm looking at the 2017ish quattro with either the premium or premium plus package. Does anyone here drive one not necessarily a '17 but any year. If so can you give me your opinion of it. You know things like comfort, power, handling, and of course reliability. Even if you don't own an A3 does anyone have any experience with recent Audis? If so let me know your opinion.
Yeah I can read reviews from mags like C&D or Motortrend but was looking for some first hand anecdotal opinions on either the A3 or Audi in general.

I'm currently researching GTI's and there is overlap so I'll toss some stuff out there as I come across it.
At the very least - Thermostat housing sucks and likes to leak. Too much leaking means a very expensive water pump job
Assuming you are getting the DSG, IS38 turbo plus some tunes will give a you S3 performance minus all the S3 handling perks.

It's a VW product so CPO if you can.
Also....worse time ever to buy a used car as prices are inflated.

Thanks for the info it's much appreciated. The thermostat housing is a good one to keep an eye out for. And you are correct I'm looking at DSG models with the 2.0 turbo engine. I'll keep an eye out for listing with a CPO cert but those are few and far between unless I open the mileage on my search to well over 500. I was hoping to keep it within 150 miles of me so I could make it there and back in one day.

Do you really think it's a bad time to buy? I was looking on Autotrader and the prices for used A3s don't seem to bad. For example here's a link to one that caught my eye and the price doesn't seem to bad considering the year, mileage, and options.

I don't know... when you get to Audi's this small, you're probably just better off getting a VW Jetta or Passat and loading it up with options. You're getting basically the same car.

The Jetta and Passat are more similar to the A4. The A3 is a small car. It has a tiny back seat and a small trunk. I looked at one when I was considering a RS3. Personally, I wouldn't even consider one given what you mentioned. Even though the A4 MSRP is 6K higher, the actual used car market puts their value within 0 to 2K difference on a 2-3 year old model with under 30K miles. The A4 is a better car in both size and interior quality.

Looking at 2017 or 2018 used cars at 25K with under 30K miles you can get into A4, 3 Series, C class no problem.

I would never buy an Audi or VW.

Well... my Audi tried to kill me (bad throttle position sensor that got stuck wide open) just 500 miles after the warranty ran out, and the dealership wouldn't even pay the $100 for the repair. Worse yet, Audi corporate tried to blame the issue on my floor mats (which were from Audi!) when I called to complain. Bastards.

I want to like the A3, but to me, it's just a reminder that the US doesn't get a proper RS3 in the states, so no! No sir! Ban that gutless hatchback!

Now, that's actually kind of hilarious that they would try that! :D (glad you aren't dead, btw.

Wow thanks for all the feedback much appreciated. I had kinda written this thread off because of lack of a responses but then out of know where here we are.

So a couple things would be helpful especially if you're not a VW/Audi fan. Like the year, make, and model plus what exactly was it that made you dislike it. Reliability, comfort, long term fit and finish, bad dealership experience, ect would be helpful to know. This could potentially be the first European car I've owned so that alone makes me a little hesitant.

As far as size goes yeah I know the A3 is small but that is what kind of drew me to it. This would be my daily commuter car to and from work(around 15mins), dropping my son off at school, or just hopping in with my wife and heading down to Costco. No long road trips in this and no need to be able to fit bigger items bought at the local hardware store.
We have a 2014 GMC Acadia Denali with a 8x12 trailer for long trip/hardware store runs.

Anyway, keep the advice coming. Cars like the 3 Series and C Class weren't even on my radar so I will definitely check them out as well. One question I had though is do you guys really think it's a bad time to buy? I could put the purchase off until late spring/early summer of 2021 if you guys think used car prices will be better by then.

Prices were on average about 10-15% higher than usual a couple of months ago. But that doesn't mean you can't find well priced vehicles now. Unfortunately you actually have to know what you want first before you can identify a good deal.

Used car prices seem to be a bit crazy the last 10 months or so for some reason. I bought a 2017 AMG C63 Cabriolet last October for $57k with 17k miles on it CPO. Then about 4 months ago I went in to the same dealership and they had a 2019 C63 Cabriolet for sale, same color as mine, similar options and 8k miles and they were asking $89k for it. I don't know what it finally ended up selling for of course but you could almost buy a new one for that kind of money.

My wife's VW was a Golf she purchased new. The car was only a year or two old when I met her and it was already starting to fall apart. Build quality was just awful and it only got worse the longer we kept it. We ended up giving it to her young half-sister who drove it a few more years and it was basically a pile of junk after a few more years (the car wasn't even 10 years old). Her sister traded it for a newer Jetta which was also a steaming pile of poo. Problems after problems. A buddy of mine also had a Jetta he bought new and it went through 3 transmission by the time it had 70k miles on it. Those were automatic transmissions. I swore I'd never own another VW again. Our neighbors seemed to love their Tiguans but I've heard they have all sorts of issues too.

A guy I used to work with had an A3 that he had constant problems with. He ended up selling it and bought a new A3 which he had a ton of problems with too. I kind of lost touch with him but you would think that would be enough to get him to never buy another Audi again.

I just wouldn't but anything made by VW or Audi. Too many horror stories for me to take a chance on them.

I had a 2014 Mercedes E550 Coupe prior to the C63 and that car was pretty good. I traded it in for the C63 after 3.5 years of ownership and I put 50k miles on it during that time. I liked that car quite a lot actually. It was comfortable, luxurious and pretty fast too. My only complaint was the brakes. If you pushed the car moderately hard you could overheat the front brakes pretty easily if you weren't careful. I don't know if that was a cooling issue or what but I basically had to keep from being too aggressive and overheating the brakes which kind of sucks in a car that makes over 400hp at the rear wheels. I don't have that problem with the C63. The E550 isn't really a sports car though, the C63 definitely is.

My wife had a 2013 CLS550 which we both loved but it was totaled about a year and a half ago by an inattentive driver who pulled out and hit my wife. We ended up getting another CLS, this one we bought new and we still have it. The proximity sensors in the front annoy us at times but overall we have no complaints about the car. It's a really nice driver, we took it up to Napa in June of 2019. Great road trip car.

I believe this Covid-19 effect is dissipating, but honestly not paying close attention. Remember that in Q2, global auto production ground to almost a complete halt.

Hey I wanna thank everyone for chiming in and letting me know your feelings about the A3 and Audi in general. I'm still looking at them because I like the size and aesthetics but I think that I've got my eye on a 2017 or newer Dodge Charger. They're a bit more expensive but they come tricked out and they got that Hemi which is hard to beat. I kinda miss the way a V8 sounds when you're cruising down the road.

I know right but that Hemi has me in its sight and I can't quite shake the feeling it's giving me.

MY18 A3 (Quattro + S-Line) and have put just over 40k KMs on it -- not one single issue so far. I was a long time VW guy and found they responded very well to regular preventative maintenance. My experience would also suggest that VW/Audi maintenance costs are higher than average. So, if you're buying used, warranty could be useful as long as it's sufficiently comprehensive. Get the vehicle history if you can. Comfort, power and handling are all great for the car/class. The A3 is "cozy" on the inside, but is still fairly comfortable for four, IMO. Feels a tad tighter than my old GTI. When I'm driving, I tend to keep it in sport mode for responsiveness and other times in manual mode when the mood strikes -- I find standard drive mode just too pokey/sluggish and makes the transmission feel a little more clunky/unrefined. Mostly at lower speeds, I suppose. Probably improves fuel economy tho. ;) So my only real criticism would be smoothness of the DSG. For comparison sake/what it's worth re: the above, my daily at the moment is a MY19 6-speed WRX.
