Hey, I want to get an idea of what you guys think of some social/political issues. Please post whether you're for/against these things, or post a short summary of how you feel. Please don't flame people who dont agree with you. if you want to argue, take it to another thread, I jsut want to get some information about the members of this forum.

I'll start by psoting the issues and my views. If you want me to add more issues, let me know and I'll edit this post.

Abortion: my stance - against (although I wouldn't ban it, I can't support it)

capital Punishment - my stance: Against it.

Environmental issues - my stance: the laws we have now are more than adequate to protect the environment

Legalizing drugs - my stance: any person should be free to put any substane they want into thier body (w/o a prescription). They should, however, still be held responsible for things they do while under the influence of these substances.

gun Control - my stance: against it.

Selective Service/ the draft - My stance: Against it, on the grounds that protecting the freedom of a nation by taking away the freedom of all the 18-25 year old males in that nation is hypocritical.

School Prayer - My stance: if the students organize a volunary prayer, that's fine, as long as it's not mandated/encouraged by school officials.

Politcal party affiliation - mine: none.

Let's hear what you think!

(I stole a lot of these ideas from BlackSoul's thread, so credit to him)

Abortion: Pro-choice but not necessarily pro-abortion, circumstances play a heavy role in this decision IMHO

capital Punishment - Yes

Environmental issues - I have no problem with environmental policy as long as it is attainable, it is realistic, and cost/benefit analysis is used in the decision making process.

Legalizing drugs - There are tons of legal drugs, for you who would like more on that list, get over it

gun Control - I control my guns quite effectively so I see no need for the government to attempt any improvements

Selective Service/ the draft - Definitely, and if you don't you don't deserve to live in this great country because you obviously want all the benefits it has to offer but you don't think you should have to make any sacrifices to preserve them.

School Prayer - I don't care one way or another

Politcal party affiliation - Republican

Abortion: my stance - absolutely, some of the worst mothers are those who don't want to be.

capital Punishment - my stance: there's a reason there aren't repeat offenders in muslim countries.

Environmental issues - my stance: don't care either way.

Legalizing drugs - my stance: absolutely. makes me look better.

gun Control - my stance: more for it than against it, but don't really care all that much.

Selective Service/ the draft - My stance: absolutely, people should defend the freedom they've enjoyed.

School Prayer - My stance: as long as it's on the students' own time.

Politcal party affiliation - mine: my own.

here's my contribution:

Stemcell research: My stance: absolutely, the embryos would go to waste anyways, it's not like we're getting them for the purpose of stem cell research.

Abortion: Women should be able to choose.

capital Punishment - my stance: On the fence with this one.

<< there's a reason there aren't repeat offenders in muslim countries >>

This kind of negative reinforcement only works to a certain point. The punishment has to be feared in order for a it to work and it hardly does that to people in this country.

Environmental issues - my stance: Save the rain forests!

Legalizing drugs - my stance: Only marijuana.

gun Control - my stance: Doesn't matter either way.

Selective Service/ the draft - My stance: Yes, but women should sign up as well.

School Prayer - My stance: Not in the classroom, but after school or before is fine with me.

Politcal party affiliation - None.

Stemcell research: My stance: See my first response. I think something should be done with those that are aborted.

Abortion: Woman's choice, but should not receive any federal funding except in extreme cases (incest, rape, medical threat). I personally find it morally reprehensible to utilize it for birth control, but it isn't my call.

Capital Punishment: For it. In fact, I call what we have today more lower case punishment. Time to kick it up a notch. Costs for capital punishment are obscene at the moment and need to be reworked however.

Environmental issues: KEY! Money is nothing, only life matters. Under no circumstances whatsoever should financial gain EVER be a consideration in environmental impact. I'm happy to donate time or money to these causes.

Legalizing Drugs: Personal choice. Do whatever you like IN YOUR HOME. This does not give anyone the right to force me to smell the smoke, nor have mine or my family's safety threatened by someone doing them. I also refuse to be in any way financially responsible for the idiots that choose to do them and end up dead or needing medical care.

Gun Control: Gun control is hitting the x ring. I have a right to defend myself ABSOLUTELY. It is MY responsibility to care for my guns and anything that happens from them is also MY SOLE responsibility. Go away government, go away citizenry.

Selective Service: For a modified version. Starship troopers had it right. Allow people to live in the country with limited powers. Only people who serve military or civic duty should EARN the right to be called 'citizens' and vote, and so forth. Let these citizens replace the current electoral college.

School Prayer: Personal choice. Do anything you want, as long as it doesn't directly detract from my learning experience. Also, there should be NO endorsement of any specific religious occurances at school. Definately no taxpayer money spent here.

Political Party: None. I don't believe in a party system, although my own beliefs closely align with the libertarian party in many cases. This area is in need of the MOST reform, and suffers greatly from financial control.

Stem Cell: Make sure 'farming' doesn't occur. Otherwise I'm all for it. I would contribute time/money to this research.

Abortion: my stance - It should be a womens right to choose, but it makes me uncomfortable.

capital Punishment - In its current flawed form, definitly against, but there may be a case for fairer application

Environmental issues - I'm concerned about the environment, but I think people should come first.

Legalizing drugs -At the momment, wholeheartly against, but that could just be just be "brainwashing" at school. My views on this are open to change.

gun Control - The ammount of guns around makes me uneasy, but I don't really think a good case can b
put forward for gun control.

Selective Service/ the draft -

<< My stance: Against it, on the grounds that protecting the freedom of a nation by taking away the freedom of all the 18-25 year old males in that nation is hypocritical. >>

At present that's about my view, but if the enemy was on our home turf, I'd support it.

School Prayer - Against it being led by officials, like at our school. But if a student wants to pray in private , it's up to them.

Politcal party affiliation - None, our political parties in New Zealand are so dismal at the momment, but I agree with some of what the labour party has done.

Stem cell: All for it, including farming. How can the rights of an unfeeling blob of cells be compared to millions fully developed peolple that feel the pain of potetienally curable diseases.
My contribution:

Genetic Modification: I feel their's a lot of unfounded fear in the publics mind, but scientists should procede cautiously, especially with food crops.

Feel free to flame me for my opinions;)

This is a good thread :)

Abortion: I'm against it unless the mother was inpregnated by rape. Also, there are people that will try to get abortion from people w/out credentials and put themselves and their fetuses in physical harm but I still have to stand against it.

Capital Punishment: I'm for it, but only if the offender (murder, rape) has been PROVED (DNA, video camera, etc..) guilty.

Environmental Issues: I don't know enough about this area to make a judgement, but it seems that everything is going a-ok. :)

Legalizing drugs: I'm against it. However, I think there should be some changes in the process of getting prescription drugs so that it's not such a hassle to refill prescriptions, etc...

Gun control: Against it. Most offenders don't get their guns legally anyway. I think people that purchase guns should take some classes before buying one though.

Selective Service/Draft: I'm for it. There's always going to be people against it, but I think if you live in a country and enjoy all its privileges and rights, you should be willing to die for it. I know this may sound harsh to some people, but it's just what I think.

School prayer: Being a Christian, this is hard to answer. Let me just say that prayer should never be FORCED upon anyone, but people should be able to gather and pray anywhere on campus.

Political Party affiliation: I don't really have one because I like different aspects of Democrat/Republican parties. I admire how Democrats tend to take care of the mid/lower class that actually NEED the help but at the same time (correct me if I'm wrong) Republicans have a good track record in times of war.

Abortion: If I was born with ovaries, I could form an opinion, as I am lacking, I wont pretend to truely understand the issue

Capital Punishment: Agree

Environmental issues: More research, more global cooperation less pointless legislation unless all countries can agree and sign

Legalizing drugs: Legalize them, then tax em. At the very least then reputable companies like fauldings etc can make medical grade drugs that dont have draino in them and stuff.

gun Control: I dont own any guns, and im against most gun controls, but do agree with legislation about safe storage.

Selective Service/ the draft: Conscription has been proven to be pointless in most wars due to lack of training of conscripts, while the real training goes to the lifers. Given proper funding and training, a conscript army will perform well, as in Israel. Otherwise mandatory national service and conscription is just creating gun toting fools with no esprit de corps.

School Prayer: I dont believe prayer should be a part of schooling, unless you are in a religious private school. Public schools run by the state should observe the seperation of church and state. Or alternatively, cater for all religions, once you have finished the 8 hour prayer session in the mornings, its time to go home.

Politcal party affiliation: Pointless. Politicians are the last people who should be in control of politics.

Abortion: Irrelevent, am not pregnant.

capital Punishment - judge not that ye not be judged.

Environmental issues - We will not recognize and may have passed the point of no return.

Legalizing drugs - coffee and tea already legal.

gun Control - mine ARE under control.

Selective Service/ the draft - See the 'to be or not to be' speach in Shakespear.

School Prayer - Maybe if I were dying.

Politcal party affiliation - Some third way.

Until you realize that you don't know what you feel, you will not know you are asleep.

Humanity is asleep, living in a wrong world.

The answer to all problems is to awaken.

Abortion: my stance - for it, if you don't like it, don't do it. if others need to, its not your business.

capital Punishment - my stance: imperfect system means eventually someone innocent will die so no. its not your place to punish like that, and life is worse then a quick end.

Environmental issues - my stance: some of the laws we have are good, and some are over zealous, and some more are probably needed.

Legalizing drugs - my stance: should be legal and grown/sold by US companies in the US. Pushing it underground does no one anygood, and as we've now seen, it only funds terrorists and other bad ppl. Drug treatment and acceptance of soft drugs like marajana is the way to go.

gun Control - my stance: personally i don't mind a gun, but so many stupid ppl seem to get em, its a lousy situation.

Selective Service/ the draft - add females to it and then we can discuss

School Prayer - do it if you want at recess or after school, pray silently right b4 u take your test, no one will know, no one should, no one should or does care. It is not illegal. In other words its a nonissue, ppl with agendas created the issue. religion has been in school b4, and it was ugly. in the earliest days it was mainly catholic bashing:)

Politcal party affiliation - mine: grudgingly democrat, if only the repubs weren't ruled by the christian right.. oh well.

This kind of negative reinforcement only works to a certain point. The punishment has to be feared in order for a it to work and it hardly does that to people in this country.

so arab people are more fearful than americans? i don't think so, i think it's because their punishments suck more. you're right it does work to a certain point, but we aren't anywhere close. all we do is give them jail time...

in the words of chris rock (on prison overcrowding):

you don't have this problem in iran, because it's hard to snatch another purse when you don't have a fvcking hand.
