What's your security setup?

My security setup is as follows:

- Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2013 (link is for the full version demo) [you can download the free version of Bitdefender Antivirus here: Download Bitdefender Antivirus Free
- MVPS hosts file (nice to keep u from even visiting bad sites and blocks many ads / tracking
- Ad-Block Plus on Pale Moon (which is like Firefox but faster)
- DoNotTrackme add on for Pale Moon
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free just to scan on a weekly basis to get rid of any tracking cookies (it always finds nothing thanks to adblock plus and donottrackme but just in case

* note, when installing SUPERAntiSpyware, please make sure to uncheck the google chrome installation during setup. After setup, enter options, and disable the checkboxes as the image below, you only need it on demand:

Nice setup man! wish I knew how to setup this sandboxie but with my current setup I don't see a use of it since I never do anything stupid while being online like go to shady sites

funny thing is I went without anti-virus for 2 years... recently installed one on my new build, scanned my old HDD and it was virus free.

maybe (admittedly) it was a little foolhardy to go without a Antivirus software but then again,.. no viruses. On the other hand, I have family members who seem to be constantly getting viruses.

I don't consider ad blockers, anti-trackers, or any of the other programs that feed user paranoia to be security related. I run an ad blocker in my browser just because the ads annoy me.

I've never run a real-time anti-virus program on any of my computers or servers and have never been infected. I occasionally run an AV scanner, but it never turns up anything.

I install a good hardware firewall on any network that I manage, but have never run a software firewall.

First i've heard of DNScrypt. can you tell us more and if it affects performance in any way?

That's security. If you don't control your identity, you don't control your security. Aside from that, Adblock can stop hacked adserver warez, so it applies, even without the liberal definition.

On Windows I used the usual browser stuff, and Avira. I also had Malwarebytes installed, and did a scan when bored, but it never found anything.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. Modern day paranoia at its finest.

I totally agree with you. Hence the reason why I use MVPS hosts file + AdBlock Plus + DoNotTrackMeh

It may not be defined as a virus but I don't want no tracking, no identity theft, no ads, nada.

I try to use as Little software as possible.

Laptop:
#Intel SSD encrypted with hardware encryption
#MSE
#Windows firewall
#DEP on for all programs
#UAC at highest level

Same goes for desktop except the hard drive encryption.

Bundle that with common sense and I'm pretty safe 🙂

Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes
Adblock Plus
OpenDNS's DNSCrypt
Snort IDS/IPS
Virtualbox for "third-party" program testing

Never had a compromised system.

I believe anti-virus software is useless and annoying. I tried some programs a few times and all they did was limit my freedom to use my own computer, delete software that I wanted to have, and use up CPU time that I could really use for more important stuff.

Instead I recommend:
  • Virustotal for scanning suspicious files
  • Sandboxie
  • Ad-block
  • Common Sense

Software anti virus is for n00bs. All that junk does is slow your machine down.

Run all your stuff through the cloud so everything coming to your house is clean, problem solved. Let the datacenter with their petaflops of processing power, terabits of bandwidth and megawatts of power bills handle it!

Leave all those ips, flops, and iops free on your personal machine to do, um personal things!

No pirated junk, no bit torrent, no advertising allowed, no scripts allowed to run, all known sites hosting malicious files don't even exist on the private subnets.

Use a Cloud if you must but don't call others n00bs for not using one.
