Sweet pickles are great for snacks and desserts. Dill pickles are unbeatable for settling an upset stomach.

Next time you get a bellyache, eat a big Dill pickle. Works for me every time.

I make my own, homemade. I take celery, carrots, pickles, green olives, mushrooms, and cauliflower and chop them to decent size for snacking. I pickle them in a mix of water, vinegar, salt, dill seeds, sliced jalepenos, whole tobasco peppers, and whole pepperoncinis. I add the juice from the pickles and other peppers as well for flavor, and pickle for several weeks in the fridge. Awesome stuff.

In fact, the batch I'm eating now has been going for months, and the carrots sunk to the bottom with all the jalepeno seeds; spicy like a mofo!

sweet pickles are the poo of satan. dill pickles are far superior. I think I've had bread and butter ones before and I didn't like them

My aunt used to pickle pearl onions and mushrooms, the mushrooms were tasty. I've never thought of pickling my own stuff. Might have to try it.

Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

1/2 onion, thinly sliced
2 medium cucumbers, thinly sliced
1 cup water
1 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup champagne vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon celery seeds
1 teaspoon pickling spice
4 whole garlic cloves, smashed
Combine the onion and cucumber slices in a clean spring-top jar.

Combine the remaining ingredients, with the exception of the garlic, in a non-reactive saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 4 full minutes to wake up the spice flavors.

Add the garlic cloves to the jar. Slowly and gently pour the pickling liquid over the onion and cucumber slices, filling to the top of the jar.

Cool to room temperature. Top off the pickles with any remaining pickling liquid and refrigerate.

Yield: 4 servings
