If you use this service what is your view points on this free package? Uptime? Speed? Does it access the mysql database fast?

I know for sure the control panel is very buggy and slow as hell can get. Its actually pretty fast here in the morning at school, but at home it was pretty slow from times. Even though they have the most sh!tty control panel i searched yahoo for, "onlinehome.us" and visited acouple sites hosted by 1and1 and they loaded pretty fast.
If your current website is on this host can you post your link so i can see if its pretty responsive and reliabile.

Thanks,
Twista

that control panel is not intuitive, and i truly believe that when i clicked to change some settings it actually send an e-mail to the tech support to do it manually. very very very slow.

but hey, it's free..

I currently use it. Control panel access is slow, but its worked for everything i needed it to do. i also dont have any experience with other panels so i dont know what i am missing. email and site have been mostly reliable with good speeds. again, this is my first hosting exp so i dont have anything else to compare it to

Has worked perfectly for me (and several friends). Their plan worked because I purchased a windows account with them as well.

My only complaint is the webmail, it is horrible. Now I just forward my mail to my Gmail account so I can't complain (although one of my clients does)

I use mine for playing around with design, for testing code and for split testing trial runs.

For this purpose it's really good, because it's slow, flaky, and whimsical (sometimes the changes go thru easily, sometimes not).

I love it. Remember, it was free.

I'm very happy with my 1and1.com service. It's currently hosting my personal website, Degenerates.org.

.htaccess file does not behave properly
Works for me.

Non Standard Control Panel
Don't care.

Only available in the US
Since when? I'm in Canada.

The MySql database can not be used for logging (ie. tracking an ad compaign or views on a certain page)
Why not? I am having no problem using the MySQL database for any reasons I choose.

problem is after that one year i know im not going to pay for another $20. My money usually goes on alot of other things instead of an website which people aren't going to donate towards hosting. If i was to use this 1 and1 account i could atleasst have 2 yrs and acouple months.
I dont really wanna pay for a domain and webhosting around the same time and theres no way i can do it every month. Prob after this 1 and 1 is up im going back free hosting with my domain.

The thing is: I really want to get the other hosting for $20 a year but adding the domain for the final price yearly is going to sump a jobless teen. Website or things i want? Car? Gas?

It's free so I can't complain but I don't think I would ever paid for hosting there cause I really hate the control panel.

i dont have a problem with the control panel - isnt slow for me. download speeds are fine, mysql is fine. ssh is nice to have, etc. only complaint that i have is the multiple logins that you have to sort through (mysql, ftp/ssh) which is a small hassle if you dont have everything saved. uptime is relatively good, only somewhat major thing was a one time outage of like 6 hours where all of their free hosting sites went down (but control panel didnt). i dont have any problem with .htacess protecting my phpMyAdmin installation. (but i used their control panel to set it up)

mysql/php scripts run slightly slower than on cihost, but it is still reasonably quick.

i will consider one of their packages when the free contract runs out in 2 years.

The login info for 1and1 is pretty dumb. I got to remember my account ID number in order to login :/
