what's your perception of people who were in a social fraternity during college?

Meatheads?
Womanizers?
Virgins with no social skills?
Only into partying and drinking?

Just wondering. Of course it depends on the school and type of greek org but what is the impression you get regarding their affiliation?

Also, why are girls attracted to guys who are in a fraternity? "Wearing letters" and you get significantly more attention from females?
Is it some sort of social status? I guess it's either a love or hate thing... some people just hate people who joined fraternities

I'm thinking of joining one next semester, actually. It would just be nice to have an established group to hang out with.

I'm not sure, but at a city school, being in a fraternity means more access to parties and such. I went to a school that didn't have much of a need for this, so the fraternity guys were really only popular amongst themselves. There really wasn't any exclusivity that came from being in one. Basically, they were mostly guys like anyone else, with some douchebaggery built in, but I expect that my school would've been different than most in that regard. At some schools, you pretty much have to join or you won't have anything to do in terms of partying. I wasn't in one because most guys at my school weren't and wasn't friends with any people who decided to rush.

So to answer the OP's question, I'd say primarily partiers/drinkers, with a fair amount of selling and consuming drugs, based on how many got shut down for it my freshman year. :) But most of them freshman/soph year were normal guys, many went inactive later on because the jr/sr guys who didn't really only partied with freshmen.

I don't think it is a specific attraction, it is just that they have the biggest parties where girls can drink free and where relatively confident men will hit on them and give them a place to sleep.

Wasn't in a frat but knew people who are/were. They made a lot of friends and had a good time. Know an equal amount of people who did it and didn't like it. Just depends. Some are meat heads, some do it for networking.

Really depends on the frat and chapter.

They threw great parties with tons of drunk girls. I attended these parties. I had no problem with them. Stop hating.

Men: Partiers that consumed lots of really shitty alcohol.

Women: Depends on the sorority, but stuck up and semi-slutty would about describe it.

I don't know, my school doesn't have a very large Greek scene, so it's really more of a fringe thing here and Frat/Sorority people don't get any sort of additional social status from it.

The people who actually went to University and had experience/interaction with people from Frats will know that they're pretty much regular people who are wanting to be part of a social group for whatever reason (Looks good on resume, friends, girls, parties).

The people who watch far too many movies and TV will tell you they're all a bunch of elitist morons who are only out to get laid.

My perception from my school:

Often from wealthy backgrounds, which they are quite proud of, lots of braggetry about Daddy's money; a lot of emphasis on getting ahead through "connections," not much emphasis on doing quality work. Generally poor students.

Often solid people, but there is an element which is really obnoxious, where you have a bunch of people from wealthy backgrounds (my parents are rather affluent as well so don't mistake this annoyance for jealously) who haven't really accomplished anything on their own, yet can be intensely arrogant for essentially no reasons beyond the accomplishments of their parents.

Again, much pride in spending Daddy's money (stated like that), pride in getting ahead through social connections rather than quality work

Sorority girls often status obsessed but many are not that bad

I was in the last stages of joining a fraternity back in '03 but pulled out when I signed up for the Army. It's hard to make generic statements because there are so many different types of fraternities and different kinds of members. We had a wide range of personality in ours.

I can say though there there is a huge opportunity to get laid. That alone makes it worth it.

Yeah, that's true; it does vary depending on the fraternity/sorority.

The best of both worlds is probably to just have a bunch of friends in frats and then go to the parties without being a member.

I didn't think they were gay, I just figured they had buttsecks when there weren't any sorority bimbos available. Other than that I viewed fratboys as underdeveloped boys without a clue what it took to be men.

when i was in college, it was not appealing, though i went to a few frat parties &
lived next door to one of the 2 all-women's houses on campus.

now, i think it might be fun, if you can get a good's sleep.

are there any fraternities who are accepting outpatients ?

I had some friends who were in frats, and my parents were part of the greek system back in the day.

It all depends. As a whole they were a bunch of idiots, but one on one they were fine.

I just like the "required" dresscode of frat boys. Polo shirts with popped collars, khaki pants that were all ratted at the bottom and a very worn in pair of newbalances. Also they were into Phish.

my roommate is in a fraternity - he's a cool guy. some of the other guys in the same fraternity are great people.

however, some of them also seem like total party animal douchebags who just want to get trashed every time. but what do i know.

so really, im guessing it's a bit hit or miss.

1st is true, 2nd is true, 3rd depends on the girl sororities you party with. I've seen groups that have "dry pledging".

That sh!t sucks.

Rich assholes who will coast through life on the coattails of their daddys and grandpas. If one was trapped on some traintracks and all I had to do was push a button to save a life, I wouldn't move an inch and just watch.
