Will everything work good together with my new system? i have heard rumours about geforce based cards and AMD Athlon processors is not a great combination or is this just gossip??
Is it necessery with 300W power supply or...? And how many fans do i really need?
I'm planning on using WinME. Should I use this OS or not?
And finally would all of these components fulfill eachother very good???

Here is what im planning to get:

Motherboard: Abit KT7 w/RAID
Harddrive: IBM 75 GXP ATA 100 7200 rpm, 30 or 45 GB
RAM: 128 MB of SDRAM
CPU: Athlon T-bird 800 MHz
Graphics card: A Geforce256 w/32 MB DDR RAM based card or Geforce2 MX w/ 32 MB SDRAM based card
Sound card: SB Live! 1024 Bulk
Monitor: Hansol 710D 17"
Modem: Billion 56kb v.90 PCI modem
Case: Aopen HQ08 maxi ATX 300Watt
CD-RW: Creative 8x4x32x internal retail
Speakers: Creative FPS 1000 (4 speakers and a subwoofer)

One issue with GeForces and Athlons is power, both are quite power hungry, if you use a GF2MX it helps elimate that problem, as the GF2MX is very light on power. Even the GF2GTS is better than the original GF (due to the .18um process if you care) I'd recommend the GF2MX over the GF anyways, it's much faster than the GF256 SDR, and depending on your settings it can even beat out the DDR, and it has a faster T&L engine and the more advanced feature set of the GF2 GTS, granted there isn't that much new..but you might as well take them if you can.

I'd personnally use Win98SE over WinME because WinME has some features I hate, but you might like them. Stuff like no realmode DOS, System Backup & Restore..

I wouldn't use the Cambridge FPS1000 speakers...Try the Altec Lansing ACS54, they are about the same price and much better sounding and higher quality construction.

I've had bad experiences with Creative CDRWs, but that may just be me. I like the Yamaha's they are quite good and quite cheap. My 8x8x24 cost me under $200 US in retail box from a chain store. You could easily do better than that.

But on the whole that system looks pretty good.

thx for your thoughts.
But don't I need the RAID to get the most out of my IBM 75 GXP harddrive which has ATA 100. Doesn't the KT7 motherboard without RAID only support UDMA/ATA 66??

I would definitely go for the GeForce 2 GTS. You can find one in FS/FT for about $180 shipped. It is a hell of a deal. They are awesome. Good luck. System looks pretty good to me.

well, i was just thinking about the geforce2 MX in games like quake3. In 1280*1024*32 res. isn't the card way to poor then, or...And what about the upcoming games which will demand more power. wouldn't it be too bad to buy a card that even now is pretty poor in 1280*1024*32 res?? BTW im living in Norway and i would have to pay about $400 for a Geforce2 gts with TV-out, so that is a bit over my reach...

I can get an ASUS 7100/T geforce2 MX with 32 mb SDR w/tv-out for $220 here in Norway, and an ASUS 6800 geforce256 w/32 MB DDR RAM and tv-out for about $300. So which should i go for????

Yes, you need the RAID version for ATA100. but you won't see any real performance difference between ATA66 and ATA100. If the time comes when HD's can actually transfer data at those speeds and you want RAID 0/1, you'd be better off buying an add-in controller.

I had a friend who had a compatability problem with the original geforce and amd chip. he traded it to someone for like a voodoo 2 or something so that should say something....

So what you're actually saying is that the HD has ATA 100 implemented but doesn't take advantage of it???

And is an add-on controller some sort of device thats gonna be put in a PCI slot or......

Ok, so no KT7 w/ RAID is really necessary then. So i'd probably go for a KT7 without RAID (that is only supporting ATA 66), but can i still buy an IBM 75 GXP HD even though it has ATA 100????

Don't get crap RAM. I'm getting Micron PC100 for a Duron system, and I think that's barely sufficent

An IBM 75GXP has a maximum transfer rate from the physical disks of about 35MB/s if I remember correctly, maybe a bit more, but it just barely maxxes out half of ATA66, so if you put two IBM 75GXPs on the same IDE chain you might be able to max out ATA66, but even then it's not likely.
The ATA100 just gives you breathing room, but you really won't be hurt if you use only 66.

Yup.
Just for fun have a link. (This is an ATA66 controller, but an ATA100 would look the same)

Big question: Is 300W power supply really needed???I might go for a MX card, but im also thinking about the future...Will we see power hungry components???

I think that system is just one big POS.

Piece of silicon
Nice system, but I'd have gone the Intel route. Then again I'm a sheep and conform to all safe and known trends.

I only have a 250Watt and I'm fine.
If the 300Watt doesn't cost much more get it, but if it's alot more don't bother.

You can use your own judgement as to what "alot" is. Personally if I were building a new system I'd get a 300watt, but if you already have a 250 try it first. That's what I did, and I found my 250 was fine.

Just curious, but your expecting to run q3a at 1280x1024 at 32 bit color? What kind of FPS are you aiming at here... 30fps? Cause i doubt an MX can do much more than that. I'm happy running the game at a steady 90fps at 800x600, but then again, thats just me..

As u see DOAcleric, that was my perception too on the MX so i would probably have to goe for the GF256 DDR...
