What's your opinion of the Visiontek Xtasy 9250 video card?

Whats wrong with the geforce 4200? It's better than the 9250 card.

If you still need a new videocard for another computer for dual monitor, get 9550 for $65 instead. This card is much better than the 9250.

If you want to upgrade for cheap from 4200, then neither is a good option and I'd recommend a used 9700 for $100.

Also are both of your monitors DVI or Analog? I'd consider a dual-DVI capable videocard if they are DVI.

Finally, if you care for 2D quality only, I'd get a Matrox card.

Not an upgrade, but for a linux box.
Since I stopped playing computer games I only need for text and maybe for HTPC.
I have both a windows pc and a linux pc so I can put either card into either box.

my windows box has 2 17" LCD with one analogue and the other digital.

the linux box has 2 15" LCD with both analogue.

Hell its a great card for that then. The card is dirt cheap too. Dont get a ti4200, simply because i heard you state that the 9250 will be nice and quiet, and thats a plus for alot of people. The 4200 has a fan. In no way is the 9250 a performance card, but its a great mainstream card. If you want to go up in peformance (3x as fast as a 9250) Try a 9550. They are only $20 more then the 9250, and provide some of the best mainstream performance ever seen for the price.

I was thinking about the Gigabyte 9550 but someone posted that they aren't as good as the G450 for text and text is the primary use of this card. I have a nVidia Vanta 16MB video card in the linux box now and it really sucks at text. I would love what the 9550 offers if I knew it would excel at text-- no fan, dual monitor, maybe an occasional game, a future in a HTPC after the linux/MySQL project.

Here's a couple of contradicting comments from users:
11/7/2004 - Text is crisp, visual quality is outstanding, performance is better than decent, and the price is right.
9/17/2004 - Text is not quite as crisp as with the Matrox (I do a lot of coding!) but it is still pretty good.

Oddly, I'm currently using a PNY Ti4200 and the text is pretty good. I can't tell the difference between the VGA and the DVI LCDs.

AFAIK ATI's text quality, both VGA and DVI are considered better than nvidia. You shouldn't have a problem with the 9550.

My 9700 looked slightly sharper on VGA than my 6800, but with the DVI port there is no difference that I can see.
