In that case, people should get a nook then and stop buying all these 8-11" $600-1,000 tablets?

That is what I did, my primary tablet is a Nook Color. I am not going to say what other people should do though.

There are lots of thin laptops available that don't cost $$$ or get hot on your lap.
Acer Travelmate/Timeline X series, Allienware M11x, Asus U' series, etc...

Look at the Jobs picture again. With ANY laptop the problem is that the pointer device for the entire system is on your junk. That simply sucks from an ergonomic standpoint. You have to bend your arm in a weird way downward instead of just touching the interface right in front of you. Now if your notebook has a touch screen that fixes the problem but none of the systems you mention have a touch screen.

I won't argue that for many things a tablet can't replace a laptop, but for media consumption on a couch the form-factor of tablets beats any laptop out there. It comes down to if you are a big enough couch potato to justify the cost for a limited-use device.
