The main reason you can't do it yet is because the hackers are sitting on their known exploits. They don't want to reveal the vulnerabilities they've discovered so Apple fixes it before iOS5 is released.

Something I can never figure out, what's the difference between tethered and untethered? Don't you have to connect the iDevice to the computer so the software can do whatever it does from the "recovery/restore" mode?

Well, a tethered hack means you can exploit the device and run unauthorized code, but it doesn't persist when the device is rebooted. If the device ever gets turned off, you have to connect to a computer and jailbreak the device again. Thankfully, hackers have found many "untether" tricks on many iOS versions...but these are separate exploits that are also blocked by Apple with software updates.

IIRC: Right now, there's a bootrom exploit that will always allow a tethered JB on any existing iPhone 4 with the current bootrom chip (unless a new bootrom chip appeared recently in newer devices, I don't know).

I don't get the whole customizing thing. Before when I had an iPhone 3G, I would go crazy and use winterboard and get customized themes and sounds. But, now with my iPhone 4, it just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Yeah I have MobileNotifier and SBSettings, but that's more for efficiency than making my iPhone look cool.

I don't like the colorful icons of the default theme. I like a more neutral theme to contrast a background.

Ouch, no offense but that looks kinda bad to me. Probably because of the transparent icons coupled with a very complex and contrasty background, so the background details get muddled up with the icon graphics. Yet it still looks better than a lot of the Android themes I've seen. I basically stay way the fuck away from anything involving skulls, tribal designs, the Android robot mascot, etc. A lot of the themes have really amateurish gradients, ugly script fonts, and just look bad in general. Don't really understand it.

I agree with this sentiment. When given the chance to customize, most people just cram as much ugly, gaudy crap into one space as possible. Just look at Myspace.

I'd rather have a design that's simple, functional, soothing, and attractive. And I'd rather leave the job to professional designers, who understand concepts like negative space and color schemes.

Compare this to the Android screenshot thread where there are already half a dozen TOTALLY different looks.

And before you accuse me of thread crapping. I'm not saying Android is superior to iOS, I'm saying IF you want to customize your phone, Android is a better choice. And I think it's probably time to put to bed at least this part of the argument... much like it's time to put to bed the battery life part of the argument in iOS's favor.

Not arguing that at all. There are definitely some things about android that I am jealous of. Specifically installation of widgets. Everything else I have seen on those customizations is just a variation of a folder with apps or a variation on how the app icons are laid out with a skin over them. Much like the myspace skins of yore, I dont currently have a need to reskin my icons. Sure I used winterboard a lot when I first got my iPhone, but grew pretty tired of it. I just don't see a need for it. There are many others who would disagree with me, and I can respect that. To each their own.

You're wrong Cheez, EVERYTHING got changed in those customizations... Down to the way apps launched, way more than just skins. You only saw the pictures, which is only half the story, the behavior of the devices were customized as well. And all of those customizations were possible without rooting, and without writing a single line of code.

It's true many people love the simplicity iOS has to offer... And depending on your preferences the simplicity can make iOS superior to Android. But it all comes down to preference.

No it's fine, and I kind of agree. I keep the same glass icon theme on at all times but change wallpaper frequently. This just happens to be what it's at now, and it IS proving to be a little distracting and hard to read.

I basically had it on because of the guitar as there's not a lot of abstract guitar wallpaper.

Did you ever consider that maybe some of us actually like the way it's laid out by default, and only want to change the color/look? I've tried many "total UI conversions" and none of them proved better or was as well done as the default. You may not like it, but you shouldn't lump all users into the same box as you. Just because we don't all completely change out interface doesn't mean we can't... it just means we don't.

You can twist this in any way. Some say that iOS is more limited, and others say that iOS might not need to be changed. Some say you can do a lot more with Android, others say you HAVE to do more to Android to get it to feel right because most of the stock UIs are terrible. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I can say that using this thread as proof "that iOS customization is much more limited" isn't right. It's just flawed logic and a lack of experience with both sides IMO. Now my experience with Android isn't as broad as iOS, but I do own both and have messed around with both quite a bit.

All I can say is that the different UIs in iOS you see here isn't just for lack of being able to change it, just for different desires and needs. In fact my Android device is layed out almost in the same way because that's how I personally like it.

Yes you can hack the hell out of your iPhone and with some effort customize your phone. However then you can't update your phone regularly... because Apple will do everything they can in each update to shut down your customization, and FORCE you back to stock.

THIS is the reason most people don't customize.. because there's not enough benefit to justify the hassle.

Not to mention it voids your warranty. Yes I understand that you can "easily", un-jailbreak your phone... and then get the phone serviced. But isn't that annoying? In order to customize your phone you have to go through all these gyrations to make it work?

Oh and you have to HOPE the dev community keeps up with Apple's attempts to lock you out... otherwise you're screwed. Like my iPad 2.

I have an iPad 2 tablet and a Galaxy S II phone... one device I can customize to my liking, the other I cannot. Period.

Anyway, yes. There's no perfect solution yet and both OSes are very good at whatever their competition is lacking. I'm not sure how mobile Windows is these days, but from the sounds of it it's fairly fluid but a little too locked down as well. Plus there's just not the userbase trying to hack and develop for it.
