Some nice looking screens... Too bad I can't do any of this with my iPad 2. Also looks like Apple is going to try to limit Jailbreaking as much as they can... Something about making reversions impossible.

Can any of that be done without Jailbreaking?

Not many grownup themes above, seriously that hello kitty crap on a grown man's phone? wow.

This is a warning to be nicer. This comes close to thread crapping

very reminiscent of old winmo 6.x desktop hehe. i love the customs you guys have, doing those kinds of things would actually be a pro to me getting an iphone. i know a bunch of people with them, and not one person has jailbroken, changed anything but wallpaper or anything. they just dont seem to care. i like making my phones look different, and so far having different widgets to play with has kept me busy with it, without needing root or anything like that. my old winmo phone lived for a while as an iphone as well as stock android with different skins, it was fun.

and to anubis, he typed sister in the thread, im sure the hello kitty was not on his phone. but, if i knew you IRL, i would load up just like that to see you have a meltdown.

I don't want to come off as a blase hipster but I've tried so many themes and just eventually got sick of all of it..especially when there are icons that clearly are not part of the theme mixed in. I do use the lockinfo app which is reason enough to jailbreak.

There was one theme I used on the iPhone 1 that I loved-- so simple, no graphics, just nice text, 'SMS', Settings..anyone know which one I'm talking about?

Hey, we thought the Bootloader check from Oct 2009 iPhone 3GS and later would stop us, but the crackers broke it. Took a while with each release but the untethered JB for later devices was always there. I'm sure the iPad 2 will reach that state soon where they regularly crank out a untethered JB also.

The benefit of iPhone hacking is that you have one GIANT community going at it. With Android, you have talent scattered all over. Some of the devs for some phones are just flat out geniuses, but you wish they could also dedicate some of that effort to other devices. For example, the Motorola Milestone hacking has been insane. We got so much to work on it. Thank goodness so much was shared with other communities like Dx development for the 2nd init that finally is working. I'm pretty sure the Milestone guys helped a ton. But at the same time, a lot of that development is useless for say the guys at HTC cracking the Incredible S. I've seen both sides and while the Milestone crew is still more talented, the IS development team has talent. It's just a shame all that talent needs to be spread thin.

6 of the 24 posts in this thread are android users trying to derail it. Get a life guys! There are thousands of android related posts in this forum, you don't have to come in here because you have some superiority complex.

Heres what mine looked like before I cleaned it. Tested out iOS 5 then put it back to normal and havent re-jailbroken yet.

That's a nice lockscreen, but what does your homescreen look like? ;)

I was hoping to see more screens like QueBert's. I would be really interested to see a "minimalistic" iPhone homescreen that could still access 30 or so functions/apps.

I had a custom theme on my 3GS for a couple weeks, but it caused noticeable slowdown so I just disabled it. Plus every time I installed a new app I had to find or create a new icon for it, which was annoying.

This is my homescreen. Be aware that I haven't re-jailbroken my phone since messing with iOS 5. I usually have 5 icons in the dock.

Those folders don't look very appealing. I was thinking something like Launcher Pro:

From that one homescreen, I can launch 30 different apps. When I had my iPhone, my one wish was to be able to hide the app icons.

How very WinMo of you!

It's very sad that you have to "hack" the device to truly customize it. And it amazes me that iPhone people are ok with this year in and year out. 07, 08, 09, 10....I'm willing to bet the new one will still be a screen filled with a bunch of square icons... i am sad panda. :(

Why is this "very sad"? Do you understand that the vast majority of people don't customize, and don't care that they don't? Sure, its nice to have, and nerds do it to the extreme...but most people really don't. Almost every Android phone I've seen used by an "average user" uses a standard launcher with a standard theme. Maybe a different background and a widget or two, but that's it.

Thankfully for us, this is Anandtech, a forum for people who are more than just average users. I see no problem with requesting more standard customization options.

Right, and the people on Anandtech that are more likely to customize are also quite capable of jailbreaking, so I really fail to see the problem or why its "very sad". You can prefer it be easier, that's fine, its the extremes.

I said I liked Quebert's homescreen. I had an iPhone, I didn't know you could make your homescreen look like that, so I want to see if anyone else has any interesting looking designs compared to the standard and fairly dull grid icon layout.

Why don't you contribute to the thread instead of calling people out for no reason?

Yes, we all know how to jailbrake, root, etc. But the point is that it would be nice if we didn't have to always do that just to get nice customization going. We should always be asking more from the designers and manufacturers, otherwise they see no need to try harder and innovate.

Sure - there's advantages to the world of Windows Mobile 6.x where there were no "rules" and you could do anything you wanted. However, as long as its still doable with a reasonable amount of effort, I don't think its that big of a deal.

Uhh... pretty much every untether since has been a userland exploit that has nothing to do with the bootrom. The bootroms of all A4 devices are exploited but they don't have a way to make the exploit persist after a reboot if Apple blocks the userland untether exploit with an iOS update.

I have mine pretty much normal, because I already have too many jailbreak programs that I NEED, and sometimes things can conflict badly so I try to lower complexity when possible.

But my sister wanted me to jailbreak hers just for the theming so she could do this:

untethered JB also.

Something I can never figure out, what's the difference between tethered and untethered? Don't you have to connect the iDevice to the computer so the software can do whatever it does from the "recovery/restore" mode?

Edit: To stay OT, my old i3G:

It is sad when you can't jailbreak, such as with an iPad 2. Since Apple lost its legal avenues to protect iOS (jail-breaking got added as a DCMA exception) instead they are now going back to stronger technological solutions.

To say OT, here is the craziest theme I have seen:
