Since my 8th grader did a report on the Pacific War, and have read bits and pieces of the European Theatre.

Now he's asking me if there's a move that I can recommend that he can watch to see both the Pacific and European side. I've seen some in the past but can't remember which ones are the good ones that don't detract much from reality.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Valkyrie! (no)

SPR, of course.

Band of Brothers was awesome as well.

Schindler's Fist in the "Adult-remake" category.

I love Saving Private Ryan - one of my favourite war movies ever. BoB is an amazing series too, I own the collector's edition

Didn't like Saving Private Ryan. The Thin Red Line came out about the same time as SPR as was completely overshadowed by it, but TTRL was a much better movie imo.

The Great Escape is the best, though.

The Longest Day is a good one for the European theater. Shows many, many different aspects of what happened on D-day.

I found The Thin Red Line incomprehensible. Fell asleep multiple times while watching it. It doesn't really have a plot or characters. It basically consists of nature shots mixed with shots of characters you don't care about getting shot. I think it's supposed to be deep or powerful or something because it juxtaposes the tranquility of nature with the violence of war.

It came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan but it is in no way just SPR in the Pacific.

I too fell asleep during the Thin Red Line. Was that the movie where Woody Harrelson blew his ass off with his own grenade? I think that's the only thing I remember. Oh and some bit about swimming in the ocean.

Letters from Iwo Jima was amazing
SPR
BoB

I wish they would base a movie off the book Battlecry!. It's an amazing book and would be a great movie (but would be long as shit).

Flags of our fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Both Clint Eastwood movies. There was a lot of bad press about Letters due to some seemingly anti-american content... but I did not see it that way when I saw the movie.

Kind of sums up the fighting mentality of the Japanese.

The Bridge on the River Kwai is an older classic. Along with a Bridge too Far. (operation Market Garden).

The Great Raid also depicts the brutalilty of Japanese p.o.w. camps although it comes across like a Pearl harbor type movie with the underlying lover story.

Some others that come to mind:
Das Boot (atlantic)
PT-109 (pacific)

Big list of WW2 movies.

For a movie about fighting Saving Private Ryan because it didnt glorify war and the scenes were very very well done. It made you realize the chances are high you shit yourself when storming a beach.

Movies about war that didnt center around fighting I like

Downfall
Schindlers List

And surprising Valkryie wasnt a bad movie. Only thing I wish is they had a native version with subtitles like Downfall.
