Personally I think he totally misunderstood evolution: as a much better way of looking at it is "flourishing of those who find an unexploited niche"; which simply implies that europeans were just the first to figure out the niche of using expanding gas to push lead down a pipe and thought the wiring of peoples who have yet to put these ideas together.
