Personally, I love Forte Agent... Until recently.

I have taken to downloading large amounts of data, several gigs of stuff daily, and I am frequently getting "Database is too large" error messages on my local computer. This entails manually compacting the databases (lists), deleting some messages that dont pertain to me, and then restarting Agent.

In all, this can be a tedious process and one that shouldnt need to happen.

Is there a better newsreader that allows you to mark and then download binary files the way agent does? I really love how it auto joins messages and puts them in a good clear format, but this database crap has got to go.

Thanks

Xnews. It is awesome

Free and fast. Just isn't very good for reading newsgroups.

I used to use Newsbin, but Earthlink's newgroup servers are flooded with nothing but spam these days.

The latest release, 1.92, has a database file limit of 4 gigs per newsgroup / folder. It used to be 2 gigs but if you're still hitting the 4 gig limit, damn, clear up some old messages. :p Seriously, enable the "purge messages" option!

I like an older one called Gravity, made by Microplanet. Haven't used it in a while thanks to P2P progams.

NewsbinPro is the best IMHO. It's not perfect, but it makes snagging binaries RIDICULOUSLY easy. USENET's never been so fun to peruse :)

P.S. Sunflower uses Supernews as its feed. Completion is awesome but retention in some groups is down to 2.5 days.

It damn well should be with the amount of advertising on it. No one would ever pay for it.

I use Free Agent for non-binary Usenet, NewsSharkNewsShark for binary content.
