What is some free (including abandonware) or cheap games you think others should check out? Doesn't matter how old or new.

Best free / cheap single player games?

What about best free / cheap multiplayer games? That has a pretty big player base online.

Tis the season to give the give the gift of free or cheap you know bad economy. :D

Don't just post a bunch of free / cheap games you know of. Post games you enjoy and recommend. Give us your own personal review or story when playing these games, why do ya love it? What makes it awesome? Why should we play it?

However there's a lot of stinkers too. So what bargain bin or free games should be avoided at all costs as well?

;)

Dwarf Fortress is the best free game I have played, but it is a bit too complex for most people.

Nethack. It is confusing at first but I think it is still one of the best games made

Cheap - Peggle.

It really is tremendous fun. Sometime's it gets very tense when you're down to teh last couple of shots. So simple and yet so much fun.

I'd have to say The 4th Coming. This is kinda like Diablo online: http://the4thcoming.com/index.php?page=thegame

The game client is free and you can find free and low cost servers which are usually heavily populated.

List of servers: http://www.t4cbible.com/index.php?page=servers&PHPSESSID=a574e15d7d8bd94cb79d162620661395

I don't know if they still have 100% totally free servers that have no special paid V.I.P stuff.

Anyways I use to play this all the time. Had a lot fun going on quests. Going deep into dungeons with a big group of people is a blast.

Free/Cheap - League of Legends.

Same type of game as DOTA but with enough new features to make it different enough. It's completely free but only certain heroes are available to play at a time. You can unlock the other heroes by using currency you earn through playing. You can also buy points with real money and spend that to unlock heroes.

Yeah, Enemy Territory was a good game. I actually liked RtCW multiplayer better, but ET was still pretty fun.

Ur-Quan masters hand down. Port of my all time favorite game Star Control II.

X-Com is a good 5 dollar game with staying power.

Best cheap game I have bought this year is Mount & Blade, Paid $5 for it from Direct2Drive. Oldest game I have on my rig is Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13. lots of replay value in it. Go to http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/ for more info on the mods available for it. GoG.com is a good source of older games now being ported for XP, Vista, & W7. Might want to check there. Plenty of free games out there on the net. Wether they interest you or not is something only you can tell. Just google around.

See if you can find the Unreal Anthology (Unreal, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament, and UT 2004) at your local Gamestop for $2.

The Vultures Eye version of Nethack is my favorite free game. I don't play it as often as I should because I have an unhealthy addiction to Eve at the moment. I am sure that will pass soon enough though.

I got 400 bucks worth of games for 50 dollars on Steam a few weeks ago.
That was pretty cheap.

Also, Jets N Guns is excellent fun for a low price. Even better than Super R-type on the SNES.
