I double majored in English and Communications. If that seems easy to you, I did it in two years, taking 20 and 24 units a quarter. My current job is in recruiting, so don't you whine your bitchy smart arse science elitism at me or I'll flush your resume down the toilet.

The fact that you finished both of those majors within two years has to mean something... 😉

I would guess that people are mentioning them as 'bogus' b/c they're 'easier'.

Hey she fraking took 20-24 units a quarter- HELLLOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm a biomedical engineering major (first year w00t w00t!) @ uci and you don't see me going around bashing other majors.

Other majors may be more difficult, such as the engineering ones, but 1/2 of you act like you have rocks stuck up your asses because you guys are turning the issue of majors into a freaking penis envy contest.

If you think English is easy why don't you actually go and DO IT. Go read a book every few days and be asked to analyze it and then write some ungodly paper. My friend has a sister @ berkely who wrote a 5 page paper on a SINGLE WORD IN A POEM. You may think "who cares - That is just such a waste" but she is going to be the ones to make big decisions- at best all of you engineers are tools and they, the people with "pansy" majors will influence others because they can command language and effectively use it to argue their positions, will make the decisions

Amazingly many people in college, including me, pick a major based on WHAT THEY ENJOY! IF they LIKE drama, wh
y the hell should they be a chemical engineer (on average they make the most out of college @ 80k) or something else!

Yes, I said that b/c she took 20-24 credits per quarter...that may mean something about the difficulty of the majors.

You have no idea if you like BME - you're a freshman.

Chemical Engineers do not, on average, make $80k out of an undergraduate program.

Also, the average Communications/English major does not make 'big decisions' over the 'tools'.

As for BME- yes I'm going to do it...I'm not going to change my major because I've been so into it after taking Biotechnology at my H.S. and some other things. That and talking to my physics teachers and seeing how similar both are (physics is uber hard for me but i've never had it b4) sinve my physics teacher is trying to make some laser with the right intensity to blow up something in the eye but leave the other parts unaffected just makes me wanna do it more 🙂

And how am I wrong. In communications/english you are going to learn how to effectively get your point across- those who can control the language will be the leaders in a society. Hell, our only presdient to have a doctorate is Woodrow Wilson - isn't that saying something?

I think a lot of presidents were lawyers. I thought a law degree was a doctoral degree.

Different mindsets. Some people grasp certain ideas better than others. People who can understand thermodynamics and do triple integer problems in their head might not be able to understand symbolism in a Kate Chopin novel, and vice versa.

I'm very much situated towards the math/science side. AP English 4 kicked my butt, I only made it out with an 82.

I can't give an opinion about a communications major, because we've had lots of sales people with a communications major, and they couldn't write a damned readable sentence to save their lives. "Come to <store>!!!! Apples are yummgoood there 3 miles south of town. Highway 53! And peaches!"

I kid you not.

Again, the average straight English/Communications major does not make as many 'big decisions' as the average science/engineering major. There are obviously exceptions with everything. Another example would be that the average college graduate earns more than the average worker without a college degree. There are obviously lots of exceptions, but I'm looking at the average.

All majors have thier place and are important. His is ...dealing with other peoples money and I'm sure he knows people with money so he chose this major to supplement his ability with a "union card" so to speak. I leaned a long time ago those so called fluff majors can acutally pay more than any engineering major whos first few years is that of a technition. Plug and play. You also don't get noticed as much as sales or managment personal in the main offices bcause you're usually in the field, lab, buried in the basement of production and testing.. The head of HP is a medevil studies major for goodness sakes.

I think you're confusing jobs with majors but understand what you're trying to say and agree with you.

But if you major in engineering, it doesn't mean you're stuck in engineering work. I don't even consider engineering a great money-making route... it's not worth it for the most part if that's what you care about. But I would say the average chemical engineer major earns more than the average communications major.

You're not joking. the amount of work needed to graduate does'nt seem comensurate with pay. I would get an MBA if money is ones prime modivator..My brother paid more in taxes last year than I made. I just did what I liked though, which happend to be science and engineering. He likes money and has plenty of it. I like 40 hour weeks (more like 30) and family time.

Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. It's just a glorified premed minor turned into a major. 90% of the people that choose this degree finish in 3 years.

A reason *some* English majors come out on top is a certain level of stick-to-itiveness... Someone mentioned above about a 5 page paper on one word in a stupid poem. Most other majors would say "screw that, what a stupid task."

But, the English majors learn to be excellent BULLSHITTERS. (seriously, there is absolutely no way to write a 5 page paper on a single word in a poem without 95% of it being bullshit.)

And, sometimes in industry, the bullshitters advance.

btw, at Alfred State College, they seriously had a basket-weaving course.... I kid you not.
And my vote for bogus college major is probably journalism: name, place, time, event, details. What the hell else do they learn the rest of their 4 years?

I think the important thing is that she did finish in 2 years no matter how many credits you take in a certain period. If being able to finish all the courses including the advanced level courses (especially if they're supposed to build off each other) in 2 years for 2 majors is possible, either the institution is easy or the program is easy.

Or that person is REALLY REALLY smart. Take for example Jean Piaget. His first scientific article was written and published when he was 12. At the age of 21 he graduated college with 2 PhD. One in Biology - Genetics, the other philosophy - epistemology.

The point is that perhaps its not easy, just that she was gifted at it. I assume nothing from her getting out in 2 years. It takes football players 4 years to complete their degrees. Does that make their degrees harder than english?

biomedical education...

which i'm forced into cuz its for the combined B.A.-MD program i'm in; why cant i have a normal BA degree?
